Dayton takes command in second half to beat Duquesne, 2-0

Dayton (5-3-1, 2-1-1) scored twice in the second half to pull away from Duquesne (1-3-1, 1-2-1) to  take a 2-0 win at UD’s Baujan Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Flyers took command of the match in the second half, with a significant advantage in shots, 17-5.

Leading the way for Duquesne was senior Deena DeBaldo led DU with three shots, including two on goal. Ashley RodriguezLexy Kendro and Brooke Schutter also had shots on net for the Dukes.

Megan Virgin finished with eight saves for Duquesne, which was outshot 23-8 for the game.

The Dukes return home for back-to-back matches with 20th-ranked Saint Louis on Thursday, April 1 and Sunday, April 4 on Rooney Field. Thursday’s match will start at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday’s set for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.

The Easter Sunday match will be the final regular season home game for the Dukes.

Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Each team registered an early shot on goal, with Dayton’s coming in the second minute and Duquesne’s coming from Ashley Rodriguez in the 6th minute.
  • Lexy Kendro had DU’s second shot on goal – to the lower center of the net – saved in the 11th minute.
  • DU’s Megan Virgin stopped Dayton shots in the 32nd and 36th minute.
  • The match was knotted at 0-0 at the half.
  • Dayton outshot Duquesne 6-3 overall and 3-2 on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Dayton was assessed three yellow cards in a 15-minute span of the first half (25′, 35′ and 39′).
  • There were 12 fouls in the first half (six on each team).
  • Dayton’s Kara Camarco put a shot off the crossbar in the 57th minute. Camarco got another shot off following the carom that was saved by Virgin.
  • Virgin posted her sixth save in the 59th minute.
  • Dayton’s eighth shot of the half found the back of the net when Itala Gemelli scored in the 61st minute.
  • Duquesne responded with its first three shots of the half as Brook Kirstein hit the crossbar one minute later. Ensuing shots by Deena DeBaldo and Brooke Schutter were both turned away on the same possession.
  • Schutter picked up DU’s first yellow card of the match in the 66th minute.
  • Dayton made it 2-0 on a goal by Diana Benigno in the 71st minute.
  • DeBaldo put a shot on net that was saved by UD’s Madelyn Dewey in the 75th minute.
  • Dayton finished with 10 shots on goal, to five for Duquesne.
  • There were 24 fouls in the match, 12 on each team.
