Point Park men’s soccer earn No. 3 seed, host IU East on Thursday

from Point Park University Athletic Department report

Point Park University earned the No. 3 seed in the River States Conference Men’s Soccer Championship, and the Pioneers host No. 6 seed Indiana University East in the quarterfinals on Thursday, April 8. Kickoff is 3:00 p.m. ET at Highmark Stadium.

The PIoneers are 6-6 overall, 5-3 RSC while IU East is 4-7, 4-4 RSC. Point Park earned the No. 3 seed by winning all but two of its conference matches in the fall. Point Park did lost its only RSC matchup of the spring to Rio Grande, but it put in the work earlier in the year to earn a home playoff game in the quarterfinals.

The Point Park-IU East winner will move on to play at No. 2 seed Rio Grande (Ohio) in the semifinals on Tuesday, April 13. The RedStorm are 12-4, 7-1 RSC and got a bye into the semis along with No. 1 seed WVU Tech (12-3, 7-1 RSC). The other quarterfinal matchup features No. 5 Oakland City (Ind.) (4-4 RSC) at No. 4 Asbury (Ky.) (4-3-1 RSC).

Just one game in the standings separates Poiint Park and IU East. The Pioneers won at IU East, 4-2, in the meeting earlier this season, which was Oct. 15, 2020. Point Park put in two goals in the second half to break up a 2-2 tie at halftime.

The seasons for Point Park and IU East have been the opposite in terms of fall and spring. Point Park played nine of its 12 games in the fall whereas IU East has played eight of its 11 games in the spring. The Red Wolves are 4-4 in the calendar year of 2021 whereas Point Park is 0-3.

The Red Wolves have won four of their last five games and have scored 17 goals in that span. That includes wins of 5-1 at Asbury (Ky.) and 5-4 (OT) at Midway (Ky.), both of which were needed in order to clinch the final playoff spot. IU East beat Midway Monday night to secure its spot.
