Duquesne defeat St. Bonaventure, 4-0, in season finale

From Duquesne University Athletic Department report

Duquesne (3-5-1, 3-4-1) exploded for a season-high four goals in completing a three-game series sweep of St. Bonaventure (0-8, 0-8) with a 4-0 win at Marra Athletic Complex in Olean, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.

Ashley Rodriguez’s first career goal – a penalty kick in the 42nd minute – proved to be the game-winner as the Dukes added second-half goals from Brooke Schutter (57′) and Tori Kopchak (61′ & 78′) in defeating the Bonnies in Olean for the second time in 72 hours.

Senior Deena DeBaldo assisted on Kopchak’s final goal, which moved her into a tie for 10th on Duquesne’s all-time list with 35 career points.

Bella DeFabbo, in her first career start, was credited with a pair of saves in posting the shutout.

Duquesne dominated the afternoon, outshooting the Bonnies 13-2. DU made the most of its shots on goal with all four finding the back of the net.

DU’s four goals were its most since a 4-2 home win over St. Bonaventure on Oct. 24, 2019.

The game concluded the abbreviated spring season for both schools.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Karley Steiner, in her first career start, sent a header off a Deena DeBaldo corner just over the crossbar in the sixth minute.
  • Brooke Schutter gathered a Lexy Kendro free kick that was knocked aside by SBU keeper Mackenzie Nolan at the far right side of the goal, but hit he right post from a near, tight angle in the 19th minute.
  • Duquesne kept steady pressure on the Bonnies throughout the match’s first 25 minutes.
  • DU generated another chance when Lauren Bell took a cross from Sydney Routch and played it to Kendro who shot high in the 36th minute.
  • Hannah Nguyen intercepted a Bonnies pass and carried it into the box where she was taken down in the 42nd minute.
  • Ashley Rodriguez converted the PK to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead. It was just the third shot of the year for the DU defender.
  • St. Bonaventure registered its first shot off a long free kick in the 42nd minute.
  • DU outshot SBU 6-1 in the first half.
  • Brooke Schutter made it 2-0 when what looked like a cross from the deep right corner, banked off Nolan and into the net in the 57th minute.
  • Schutter’s goal came on the first shot for either team in the half.
  • Rodriguez put a deep shot on net that was saved by Nolan to the foot of Tori Kopchak who put it away in the 61st minute.
  • Kopchak added another goal from nearly the same spot off a pass from DeBaldo in the 78th minute. The point was the 35th of DeBaldo’s career, tying her for 10th on DU’s career list.
