PSN 1-on-1: Pitt women’s soccer Randy Waldrum

Pittsburgh Soccer Now‘s John Krysinsky caught up with Pitt women’s soccer head coach Randy Waldrum as his program is looking to take another step forward in 2021, his fourth season at the helm.

Among the topics Waldrum discusses in this exclusive interview from his office at Peterson Sports Complex include:

  • The process of building a college soccer program
  • Assessing his program’s development, as he’s now in his fourth season
  • Overview of roster
  • Influx of local players and Canadians
  • Expectations for the 2021 Fall season
  • Importance of squad rotation in the preseason and early season games
  • Experience coaching Nigerian National Team

And much more!

Waldrum was announced as the fourth head coach in Pitt women’s soccer program history by Director of Athletics Heather Lyke on December 19, 2017 and has slowly brought the program toward respectability.

Despite the best season in team history in 2020-21, the Panthers have their sights set still higher for 2021-22. The team can surely improve on their 3-5 ACC record: they had a chance to beat three different nationally ranked teams this past year, #10 Virginia, #2 Florida State, and #3 Clemson, but fell short each time. Coach Waldrum thinks the incoming freshmen and transfers will be a massive contribution to the team.

The extended 2020-21 season, Pitt finished with an 11-5 overall record, but fell short in ACC play, where he acknowledges and hopes they can make another step this Fall by reaching the six-team playoff tournament and earn a NCAA tournament bid for the first time in program history.

The legendary women’s soccer coach ranks 14th in NCAA history in career head coaching victories (408) while also ranking sixth amongst active head coaches.
