Game Summary

The Pitt Panthers were pushed to the limit against ACC rival Syracuse, but survived with a dramatic 3-2 win extra time at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Friday night.

Freshman midfielder Guilherme Feitosa scored the game-winner in the 109th minute of a see-saw match which the Panthers took 1-0 and 2-1 leads.

“I am very happy with the effort,” Pitt’s Head Coach Jay Vidovich said. “Particularly in the last five minutes of double-overtime where everyone pushed and showed they wanted to win the game. We found a way to win when we weren’t playing well at times but I am glad we were able to push toward the end and find our way into the back of the net.”

With the match tied a 1-1 for most of the second half, the match saw a wild finish in the final four minutes of regulation.

In the 86th minute, Bertin Jacquesson sent a cross from left to right toward the back post who found the 6-foot-2 Ordoñez for the score. Three minutes later, Syracuse drew a penalty inside the box and converted the penalty kick, sending the game into overtime at 2-2.

Syracuse wouldn’t go away, coming back each time in regulation, forcing the match into overtime by drawing a penalty — with Pitt’s Mohammad Abdulani guilty of a foul in the box — only moments after Ordonez’s header.

The Orange’s Busquets Manel converted the penalty kick in the 89th minute to send the match into overtime.

Pitt outshot the Orange 2-0 in the first overtime and had two corners to Syracuse’s zero, but the score remained the same after 10 minutes.

The Panthers controlled almost all possession in the second overtime and nearly came away with the victory in the 104th minute as junior Valentin Noel’s right foot attempt inside the six hit the post and deflected right.

With one minute left to play, the Panthers drew a corner kick. Jacquesson served it from left to right and found Feitosa from eight yards out, who headed into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Pitt’s Rodrigo Almeida opened the scoring early in the match, in the 6th minute putting back a rebound at the near post.

Syracuse (5-5-1, 1-3 ACC) responded in the 29th minute as Noah Singelmann took a cross from right to left and headed it on goal from inside the six yard box.

The score remained 1-1 at the break, with Syracuse outshooting the Panthers 6-5 while both teams totaled one corner each.

The Panthers and Orange played an even first half, with six shots for each side — however by the end of the match Pitt held the edge in shots (15-8) and corners (7-3) though the teams with even with shots on frame (4-4).

Pitt improves to 6-3 overall and they’re now 3-1 in ACC.  They’ll return to action on Tuesday evening, when they face Cleveland St. in a non-conference match (7 p.m. kickoff) at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
