We are officially one week away from the WPIAL boys and girls soccer playoff brackets being released, as the boys’ schedule intensifies with many key section matchups on Wednesday.

Many playoff spots have been cliniched, but here are some very fascinating storylines heading into Wednesday’s action:

  • Class 3A/Section 1: Fighting for last spot: Indiana and Knoch face each other. Knoch won the first match (3-0) at home.

UPDATE: Indiana (7-7-0) beats Knoch (5-7-1), 3-0 to earn the last playoff spot out of this section.

  • Class 3A/Section 3: Thomas Jefferson (10-1-2) and Belle Vernon (9-2) face off with top spot in section on the line.

UPDATE: TJ with the season sweep of BVA — to take the section title.

  • Class 3A/Section 4: Franklin Regional (12-1) and Plum (11-1) are still in contention for section title.  FR can clinch at least a share of the section title if they beat Greensburg Salem tonight while Plum faces a tough test at Gateway. Plum must also win Monday at Greensburg Salem to at least clinch a share of the section title.

UPDATE: Plum (now 12-1) keeps pace and Section title hopes alive, while Franklin Regional (13-1) handles Greensburg Salem, 10-1, to finish its section schedule.

  • Class 2A/Section 1:  Keystone Oaks (5-6) trying to win to tie for fourth place with idle Avonworth (6-6), which would earn each team a spot in the playoffs as play-in game will be included in the brackets.  Meanwhile, East Allegheny (6-5) must beat rival South Allegheny to clinch third place.

UPDATE: KO is going to the playoffs…

  • Class 1A/Section 4:  Bentworth already has secured at least a tie for section title, but if they were to lose to Beth-Center and Seton LaSalle would beat rival Brentwood, Seton-LaSalle would tie the Bearcats with the same section record, though Bentworth does hold the head-to-head edge going 1-0-1 in the two games this season.  UPDATE: Bentworth defeates Beth-Center, 8-0. Bentworth cliniches outright section title and finishes undefeated (9-0-1) in section play. Seton LaSalle, who beat Brentwood, 5-0, will finish in second place.
  • Class 4A/Section 2:  Canon-Mac and Peters Twp essentially playing for Section title on Thursday. Canon-Mac won the first match with a comeback, 3-2 (OT) win.
