The final couple days of the WPIAL boys and girls soccer regular season will be played on Monday and Tuesday, but with a few exceptions, most of the playoff spots have been cliniched as we head toward Wednesday’s playoff bracket selections.
In addition, please be aware that the WPIAL has once again determined that the teams with the highest seeding will be hosting playoff matches through the first two rounds, and it’s still uncertain if they will also host semifinal round matches at the highest seed.
The WPIAL Finals are scheduled to be played at Highmark Stadium, on Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7. However, if the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC clinch a home playoff spot, and likely will play on November 7, some of the WPIAL Championships’ schedule could be reshuffled slightly.
Here’s a look at Class 3A standings along with a Section-By-Section breakdown of the teams that are in the playoffs and our projections for seedings.
CLASS 3A
Across the classification, all playoff spots are clinched. Here’s a look at where they stand in each section and below a predicted look at the potential playoff seedings.
Section 1
IN: Hampton, Kiski Area, Mars, Indiana
Team | Conf. Record |
Overall Record |
Hampton | 13-0-0 | 14-1-0 |
Kiski Area | 12-2-0 | 13-3-0 |
Mars | 10-4-0 | 12-4-2 |
Indiana | 7-7-0 | 9-8-0 |
Knoch | 5-7-1 | 6-9-2 |
Freeport | 4-8-1 | 4-8-1 |
Highlands | 2-11-0 | 3-13-0 |
Armstrong | 0-14-0 | 1-14-0 |
Great seasons for Hampton (12-0 in section and only loss to 4A North Allegheny) and Kiski Area, as the defending WPIAL and PIAA champs, Mars are sitting in third but could possibly be a sleeper team. We’ll see how tough this section is when the playoffs begin. Indiana needed a win against Knoch on Thursday night to earn the last playoff spot from this group.
Section 2
IN: West Allegheny, Moon, South Fayette, Montour
West Allegheny were head and shoulder the class of this section, and could very well be the most dominant team in the Classification when it’s all said and done. Still, the rigors and competitive nature of this section led to three teams last season making the top four, yet it was Mars that took home the WPIAL title last season.
Team | Conf. Record |
Overall Record |
West Allegheny | 14-0-0 | 18-0-0 |
Moon | 12-2-0 | 14-2-0 |

Team | Conf. Record |
Overall Record |

Thomas Jefferson won the outright section title by sweeping Belle Vernon, including a win last week. Key non-section wins for the Jags include beating Class 4A Baldwin (2-0) and Class 2A playoff contender Elizabeth Forward (1-0).

^ Cliniched share of section title / * Clinch share of section title with win vs Greensburg Salem on Monday

Franklin Regional | 13-1-0 | 13-2-0 |
Plum | 12-1-0 | 14-2-1 |
Gateway | 9-5-0 | 10-8-0 |
Penn Hills | 7-7-0 | 9-9-0 |
West Mifflin | 5-8-0 | 7-9-1 |
Woodland Hills | 5-8-0 | 5-9-0 |
Obama Academy | 3-11-0 | 5-11-0 |
Greensburg Salem | 0-13-0 | 1-14-0 |
Congrats to Penn Hills, for clinching first playoff berth since 2004. The Franklin Regional-Plum rivalry has been a good one in this section the past few years. We’ll see if Plum (who still have a match remaining vs Greensburg Salem to clinch share of section title) can break through after struggling to get past the first round despite good regular season records the past few years.
