The final couple days of the WPIAL boys and girls soccer regular season will be played on Monday and Tuesday, but with a few exceptions, most of the playoff spots have been cliniched as we head toward Wednesday’s playoff bracket selections.
In addition, please be aware that the WPIAL has once again determined that the teams with the highest seeding will be hosting playoff matches through the first two rounds, and it’s still uncertain if they will also host semifinal round matches at the highest seed.
The WPIAL Finals are scheduled to be played at Highmark Stadium, on Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7. However, if the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC clinch a home playoff spot, and likely will play on November 7, some of the WPIAL Championships’ schedule could be reshuffled slightly.
Here’s a look at Class 4A standings along with a Section-By-Section breakdown of the teams that are in the playoffs and our projections for seedings.
CLASS 4A
Across the classification, all playoff spots are clinched. Here’s a look at where they stand in each section and below a predicted look at the potential playoff seedings.
Section 1
IN: Seneca Valley, Fox Chapel, Butler, North Allegheny
Team | Conf. Record |
Overall Record |
Peters Township | 10-1-1 | 13-1-1 |
Canon-McMillan | 10-1-1 | 13-2-1 |
Mt. Lebanon | 7-3-2 | 9-6-2 |
Upper St. Clair | 6-5-1 | 6-8-2 |
Bethel Park | 4-7-1 | 6-8-2 |
Brashear | 1-11-0 | 2-13-0 |
Baldwin | 1-11-0 | 1-15-1 |
Once again, Pine-Richland, boasting a 6-6-1 overall record, are the odd team out in this section this year. Costly back-to-back losses to Butler and North Allegheny. Seneca Valley are section champs again. The defending WPIAL & PIAA champs, with added experience and already a deep roster, fared very well again in section, remain unbeaten and have just one draw (vs Fox Chapel).
Section 2
IN: Canon-McMillan, Peters Twp, Mt. Lebanon, Upper St. Clair
Team | Conf. Record |
Overall Record |
Peters Township | 10-1-1 | 13-1-1 |
Canon-McMillan | 10-1-1 | 13-2-1 |
Mt. Lebanon | 7-3-2 | 9-6-2 |
Upper St. Clair | 6-5-1 | 6-8-2 |
Bethel Park | 4-7-1 | 6-8-2 |
Brashear | 1-11-0 | 2-13-0 |
Baldwin | 1-11-0 | 1-15-1 |
Canon-Mac and Peters split the season series to share the section title, but Peters’ are the WPIAL runner-up, have a lot of experience back, have the slightly better overall record and rebounded impressively to beat Canon-Mac in the rubber match, 4-1, so our hunch is that they have the inside track to the second seed in the 12-team playoff tournament.
Section 3
IN: Norwin, Allderdice, Central Catholic, Penn-Trafford
Team | Conf. Record |
Overall Record |
Norwin | 12-0-0 | 13-1-1 |
Allderdice | 8-3-1 | 12-4-1 |
Central Catholic | 7-3-1 | 7-5-1 |
Penn-Trafford | 6-6-0 | 8-7-0 |
Latrobe | 5-7-0 | 6-9-0 |
Connellsville | 2-10-0 | 3-12-0 |
Hempfield | 0-11-0 | 1-11-0 |
Norwin has now won four section titles among this grouping in the last five years. If Peters-Canon-Mac, is it possible that they could earn the 3-seed in Class 4A? If they want to return to the Finals, like they did in 2019, that would give them a better path.
