WPIAL Girls Soccer Class 2A Standings & Playoff Seeding Projections

The final couple days of the WPIAL boys and girls soccer regular season will be played on Monday and Tuesday, but with a few exceptions, most of the playoff spots have been cliniched as we head toward Wednesday’s playoff bracket selections.

In addition, please be aware that the WPIAL has once again determined that the teams with the highest seeding will be hosting playoff matches through the first two rounds, and it’s still uncertain if they will also host semifinal round matches at the highest seed.

The WPIAL Finals are scheduled to be played at Highmark Stadium, on Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7. However, if the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC clinch a home playoff spot, and likely will play on November 7, some of the WPIAL Championships’ schedule could be reshuffled slightly.

Here’s a look at Class 2A standings along with a Section-By-Section breakdown of the teams that are in the playoffs and our projections for seedings.

CLASS 2A

Across the classification, all playoff spots are clinched.  Here’s a look at where they stand in each section and below a predicted look at the potential playoff seedings.

Section 1

IN: North Catholic, Avonworth, Beaver Area, Quaker Valley

Team Conf.
Record
Overall
Record
North Catholic 9-1-0 14-1-0
Avonworth 7-1-1 10-3-1
Beaver Area 6-4-0 8-4-0
Quaker Valley 4-5-1 5-7-2
Hopewell 1-7-0 7-7-1
Ambridge 0-9-0 0-12-0

North Catholic are the two-time defending champs — and they’re are poised to made another deep run.  But watch out for Avonworth, last year’s runner-up in this section and in Class 2A. After losing three matches to open the season, including a loss to NC, Avonworth is riding an impressive 11-game unbeaten streak, including a 2-1 win in the return match vs NC.

Section 2

IN:  Shady Side, Burrell, Deer Lakes, Freeport

Team Conf.
Record
Overall
Record
Shady Side Academy 9-0-1 9-1-1
Burrell 5-1-3 9-3-3
Deer Lakes 6-3-0 8-7-0
Freeport 3-5-1 3-10-1
Valley 2-6-1 4-7-1
Highlands 0-10-0 0-15-0

In their second year after stepping up from Class 1A, Shady Side is well positioned to return to the WPIAL finals. Burrell showed they could score on SSA, as the second meeting between section rivals ended in a 3-3 draw.

Section 3

IN:  Mount Pleasant, Southmoreland, Yough, McGuffey, Waynesburg Central

Team Conf.
Record
Overall
Record
Mount Pleasant 8-1-0 12-4-0
Southmoreland 8-1-1 11-1-2
Yough 6-2-1 11-3-1
McGuffey 3-7-0 6-9-0
Waynesburg Central 3-7-0 5-8-0
Brownsville 0-10-0 2-11-0

If Mount Pleasant defeats Yough on Tuesday, they’ll take the section crown outright, but with a loss, the title will go to Southmoreland.  The top two teams in this section split their season series.

Section 4

IN: Elizabeth Forward, South Park, Keystone Oaks, South Allegheny, West Mifflin

Team Conf.
Record
Overall
Record
Elizabeth Forward 8-0-2 13-1-2
South Park 8-0-2 11-2-4
Keystone Oaks 5-5-0 6-10-0
South Allegheny 3-6-1 4-10-2
West Mifflin 3-6-1 4-12-2
East Allegheny 0-10-0 0-12-0

Some interesting scenarios unfolded in this section, as Elizabeth Forward and South Park played to 1-1 draws in both meetings, and with identical 8-0-2 records, they share the section title.  Would be interesting to see if they meet again in the playoffs — they might need to build in some extra time on the schedule.  Elizabeth Forward has the slightly better overall record but these teams are only separated by the thinest of margins.
