WPIAL Girls Soccer Class 1A Playoffs: Freedom defeats Aquinas Academy, 7-1

WPIAL Girls Class 1A Section 3 champions Freedom, a program that is always in the mix for a spot at Highmark Stadium host, blitzed 12-seeded Aquinas Academy, 7-1, in the opening round of the WPIAL playoffs at Jimbo Covert Field in Freedom on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freedom would get on the scoreboard early, as Renae Mohrbacher would guide home a left footed shot to make it 1-0 in the 5th minute.

Shortly after the opening goal, Freedom continued to bring pressure, and with that more goals in the first half. Olivia Evans would extend Freedom’s lead to 2-0 shortly after the opening goal. That was followed up by a loose ball inside the Aquinas Academy box which would lead to Mohrbacher’s second goal of the game taken from the spot.

Jules Mohrbacher, not wanting to let her sister have all the fun would get her first goal of the game to make it 4-0 for the Bulldogs. Finley Paxton would get herself onto the score sheet when a ball she sent into the goal area would make its way across the box and into the net.

Renae Mohrbacher wasn’t done. She displayed some fancy footwork in traffic while using the outside of her right foot  to place a shot inside the far back post, to extend Freedom’s lead to 6-0, getting her the hat trick before the half.

As the first half was almost expired Elina BouSamra would get Aquinas Academy on the board. BouSamra would volley a ball over the outstretched arms of the keeper to make it 6-1 headed into halftime.

The second half the scoring pace slowed, but Freedom would add one more tally when Shaye Bailey would steer a shot home to make it 7-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Freedom’s next match on Wednesday will be against the 4-seeded Bishop Canevin at a site TBD.
