It was a thriller in Cincinnati, but the Riverhounds SC came up short, losing to FC Cincinnati, 2-0, as they surrendered a pair of goals in a short span in the first period of extra time.

FINAL: FC Cincinnati 2, Riverhounds SC 0 (AET)

Among the strongest performances on Tuesday night at TQL Stadium for the Hounds came from defender Arturo Ordonez, a former Pitt Panther, and rookie goalkeeper Jahmali Waite, who made numerous big saves in the second half to keep the match scoreless. PSN’s Alan Saunders caught up with Riverhounds goalkeeper Jahmali Waite, defender Arturo Ordonez and Assistant Coach Dan Visser after the match. (See below).

Alvaro Barreal scored twice in the first extra-time period, converting a penalty kick in the 95th minute and driving home another score from a wide angle in the 98th minute. Cincinnati (3-4-1 all competitions) will wait to learn its fourth-round opponent.

Both goals ignited some frustration from Pittsburgh soccer fans (see Twitter Reaction below).

The goals were Barreal’s first of 2022 in any competition for Cincinnati, and they allowed the club to advance to the next round which is scheduled to be played May 10 and 11.

The Hounds ended their 2022 Open Cup run with its sixth loss all-time vs MLS teams in the competition (1-6-0 overall vs MLS opponents in Open Cup).  The Hounds will return to action Saturday when they face Atlanta United 2 at Highmark Stadium (7 p.m. kickoff).
