Robert Morris women remain unbeaten after playing UMass to 1-1 draw

from Robert Morris University Athletics report

Closing out a four-game homestand, the Robert Morris University women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the University of Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex.

With the tie, the Colonials stand at 2-0-2 overall, while the Minutewomen move to 1-2-1 this season. Robert Morris has played in its second-straight contest ending in a tie this season.

“I was pleased with our result today. UMass is a talented team and made things hard on us,” Head coach Chris Shaw said. “However, I thought our team executed the game plan and showed a lot of fight and determination. This was definitely a game that this young group of players can build on.”

In the first half, freshman Renae Mohrbacher saw her shot sail right of the post in the 6′ before the Minutewomen fired three shots on goal, all saved by redshirt senior keeper Isabella Bohlen. UMass continued to be aggressive as they tallied three shots and two corner kicks over the next 16′.

The Colonials were able to strike first in the 36′ as freshman Paloma Swankler delivered a pass to junior Haleigh Finale to the top right corner of the box, where her shot deflected off a UMass defender and into the right side of the net, to give Robert Morris a 1-0 lead. The Minutewomen responded just two minutes later. After a corner kick, Maya Masotti was able to head it back down towards Ella Curry where she fired a shot to the right side of the net, to tie the game before half, 1-1.

With some aggressive play consistently through the second half, UMass held a 6-2 shot advantage, one of them being placed on goal.

Bohlen collected a season-high six saves on 13 shots faced while playing all 90 minutes of action on Sunday.
