From Robert Morris University Athletics Department report
Robert Morris University women’s soccer team kept their unbeaten streak alive after playing to a 0-0 draw in their Horizon League opener against Green Bay on Thursday afternoon.
“I thought the team played well today and did a great job of limiting Green Bays chances,” head coach Chris Shaw said. “However, I was disappointed with our inability to finish any of the chances we created.”
With the tie, the Colonials stand at 5-0-3 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Phoenix sit at 2-3-1 this season behind a 0-0-1 record in league play. This is the second-straight season these two programs have ended in a draw.
Robert Morris peppered the net right from the opening kick, as freshman Renae Mohrbacher recorded two shots on goal in the first three minutes, both saved by keeper Annie Mason. Green Bay responded just a minute later with two shots, one of them being on goal and saved by redshirt senior Isabella Bohlen. Off a throw-in in the 40′, freshman Cali Laymon put a cross to the far-left post that found senior Kayla Veloso-Lima who put it in the back of the net, unfortunately an offsides penalty was called.
In the second half, the Colonials picked up right where they left off as they recorded four shots and a corner kick in the opening 10′ of the half. Robert Morris continued to spray the net at Mason but could not capitalize on the opportunities, as she recorded four saves in the second half. The Colonials defense was stellar throughout the contest as they limited the Phoenix to just five total shots (one of goal).
The Colonials showed why they lead the Horizon League in shots as they tallied 17 total shots this afternoon, nine of them coming on goal. Gabriella Lecuona and Paloma Swankler led RMU off the bench with four shots apiece, with Swankler recoding three at the net. Malia Kearns registered three shots, while Mohrbacher put a pair of shots on goal.
