3A Game Capsules

Plum vs Ambridge

Plum has been to this doorstep in three of the last four years, only to fall short of making it to Highmark Stadium.

Will this be the year?

The Mustangs are led by recently named All-State selection Lucas Pittman.  For the second consecutive year, Ambridge is making a deep run as a lower seed.  Last year, they made it to the Final Four of the Class 2A, eventually falling to Quaker Valley, 3-2, in extra time.

Moon vs Montour

These two section rivals have already squared off twice this season, with unbeaten Moon, taking both matches by scores of 1-0 and 3-0.  The section was one penalty kick shooutout win (for Plum over South Fayette), away from having all four playoff teams in the Final Four.  Moon has been the lone remaining team in Class 3A without a loss, and for good reason, they have Akron recruit, Ryan Kopay, leading the way, but don’t look past Davu Jansson, Ryan Hildenbrand and Chris Brancato who can contribute to the attack along with solid goalkeeping from Zachary Shutak.

Moon’s only non-win, in the opener, came in a 0-0 opening day draw vs Class 4A North Allegheny at the Pine-Richland tournament.  The Tigers are so good a bringing high press and forcing teams into making mistakes.

2A Game Capsules

While in 2A, both South Park and Quaker Valley have rolled through the first two rounds, but will meet a few tough challenges on Monday night.

South Park vs Deer Lakes

The Eagles have run into playoff disappointment in recent years, and are hoping to make it back to Highmark Stadium for the first time since 2015, when they finished as runner-up, and since 2014, when they won the Class 2A crown.  The number one seed in the tournament, South Park has certainly been all business thus far, rolling to a pair of 6-0 victories against Mt. Pleasant and McGuffey.   Deer Lakes are back in the final four again, as they needed a pair of 1-0 wins against Hopewell and West Mifflin.

Beaver Area vs Quaker Valley

The section rivals will meet for the third time this season, as Quaker Valley has prevailed, 5-0 and 2-0 during the regular season.  The Quakers have been a mainstay at the top of the WPIAL boys soccer ranks for a very long time. After an awfully impressive run to taking both WPIAL and PIAA titles a year ago, they’re back with an other strong outfit looking to win their 11th WPIAL title.  Head Coach J.J. Veshio has his team playing well again in the postseason, including a 6-0 first round win vs Freeport, but they were pushed against section rival, Avonworth, in the quarterfinal round, pulling out a 2-1 win.  Beaver had an impressive 8-2 first round win over Brownsville, then pulled the slight upset in the quarterfinal round, taking two-time Class 2A champs Shady Side Academy to the distance in a match that ended 1-1, then winning 8-7 in a classic penalty kick shootout.
