Match Day Notes
The WPIAL Girls Class 4A playoff tournament begins Monday with just four matches in each classification as the teams battle to move their way to the Finals which will be played at Highmark Stadium. The top four seeds will receive a bye, that includes: Peters Township (1), Seneca Valley (2), Penn-Trafford (3) and North Allegheny (4).
There Will Be A New Champion!
That’s right! With Fox Chapel moving down in classification (to 3A), that means we’ll have a new WPIAL Girls Class 4A champion this year.
The field appears to be pretty wide open. There’s a lot of high level talent spread around and many teams with solid depth, so the right team (like Fox Chapel did last year) could get hot and make a deep run to the Finals.
Still, Peters Township and Seneca Valley have been impressive as the top two seeds, they haven’t completely dominated the competition. We can’t count out Penn-Trafford either, as they were Section 1 champs in their return season to Class 4A.
Peters finished the season without a loss, and only one blemish in a 2-2 tie with a talented and probably fuller Upper St. Clair squad on Sept. 11.
Seneca Valley’s lone loss to a WPIAL team came in a very tight, 2-1 contest back in August to Peters Township. Lurking as always is North Allegheny, who seem to be getting better as the season has evolved. The Tigers have the recent pedigree, playing in the WPIAL Final four times in the last five years, winning three titles during that stretch. The Tigers placed second in Section 3 and allowed only 13 goals in 17 games. North Allegheny dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 2 seed Seneca Valley, then played a scoreless tie with the Raiders in the second half of section play.
The Indians have been very well organized out of the back, with keeper Molly Kubistek posting 12 clean sheets — while their team defense has limited opponents to eight goals. With a balanced attack, Peters Township, with Head Coach Taylor McCullough (12), Julia Spergel (11) and Paige Malley (10).
Upper St Clair will be without the talents of Serra Dupre, who suffered a season ending knee injury, as they’re a No. 7 seed, but they still have a talented roster, though their current form is not great (having lost four of its last seven), while Section 2 rival, No. 6 seeded Canon-McMillan squad coached by Matt Fonagy and led by Emilee Tonkovich, took the edge in their battle for second place in Section 2 and have shown they can play with anyone in this classification.
Pine-Richland is in the field, with a new coach (on the girls side) — Jordan Wiegand — who won a WPIAL title with the boys as a 5-seed in 2022. The Rams have plenty of upper classman who bring experience as they’re eager to make a run.
We interviewed Wiegand after the brackets came out on Wednesday, as he said he’s always looking forward to match-ups where they step out of section, as they will now face high scoring Latrobe.
