Pittsburgh Riverhounds have received full approval on the signing of central defender Sergio Campbell ahead of Saturday’s United Soccer League season opener against the Rochester Rhinos.
It’s most likely that Campbell will be paired with returning defender Willie Hunt to make the team’s central defense.
Campbell arrives in Pittsburgh after spending the 2015 season with the club’s Major League Soccer affiliate Columbus Crew SC.
The 24-year-old Jamaican made one regular season appearance for Columbus last year after joining the Black & Gold as the No. 19 selection in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.
Jamaica has fielded Campbell twice at full national team level as well as at the Under-20 and U-17 brackets. He was developed by Portmore United F.C. before moving to the United States in 2011 to attend the University of Central Arkansas. He transferred to Connecticut after his freshman season.
Campbell made two USL appearances during a loan spell at the Austin Aztex last year.
