The National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced on Monday the 2016 NSCAA High School Boys and Girls All-America Teams as two local senior high school standouts — Matt Happ (Seneca Valley) and Aideen O’Donoghue (Canon-McMillan) received honors.
Happ, a dynamic, speedy forward that gave top classification defenders fits for the good part of the past four years, led the Raiders to an undefeated regular season, and to the WPIAL Class 4A Finals in his senior year, and to the PIAA 3A finals in his junior year.
Happ told Pittsburgh Tribune-Review in October that he plans on attending college for neuroscience and from there plans on attending medical school, hopefully to become a neurologist. He said that his plans to play soccer at the next level were up in the air.
O’Donoghue, who recently changed her college commitment to the University of Pittsburgh, led Canon-McMillan girls to its first-ever PIAA title in 2016, compiling 29 goals and 21 assists along the way. O’Donoghue is a member of the Riverhounds Development Academy and was invited to United States Women’s Soccer team U-17 camp earlier in 2016.
Players on this year’s NSCAA High School All-America Teams will be formally acknowledged for their accomplishments at the NSCAA All-America Luncheon on January 14, 2017 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in conjunction with the 2017 NSCAA Convention.
I will have more on the local high school and college scene with the Final 2016 Edition of the Pittsburgh College Soccer Show podcast later this week.
