The defending WPIAL Class 1A Winchester Thurston boys soccer team have started this season at the JRK Memorial Classic at Pine-Richland High School, by taking on competition from higher classifications.

That didn’t seem to be any problem for the talented and experienced Bears, who came away with an impressive 5-0 victory against Class 3A Penn-Trafford on Saturday at the Ram Cage on the campus of Pine-Richland High School.

Scoring goals for Winchester Thurston included first half brace from senior Alex Hauskrecht and a goal from senior Oliver Daboo.  At the very start of the second half senior Mert Akdogan scored, then sophomore Michael Miller provided the capper in the 69th minute.

On Sunday in Day 2 of the JRK Memorial Classic, Winchester Thurston will face North Allegheny (who tied Moon on Saturday) and Penn-Trafford will face the hosts, Pine-Richland.  Both matches are scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
