On Monday, the University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team were selected with an at-large bid for the first time in program history to participate in the NCAA Division I women’s soccer tournament.
The announcement came a little after 4 p.m. — as the entire team gathered at the Peterson Sports Complex to find out their fate.

Shortly after learning that they will be hosting their first-round match up vs Buffalo (Saturday at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field), Pittsburgh Soccer Now’s John Krysinsky caught up with Head Coach Randy Waldrum and sophomore midfielder/forward Sarah Schupansky for a segment on Pittsburgh Sports Live.
NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament: Pitt selected as 4-seed; will face Buffalo at home on Saturday
The Panthers set program records for overall wins (12) and ACC wins (5) during the 2022 regular season and qualified for the ACC Championship field for the first time in program history. The Panthers tied No. 4-ranked Notre Dame, 1-1, on Sunday in the 2022 ACC Championship First Round before falling in a penalty kick shootout, 5-4. The team has also set records in points (128) and goals (44) and tied the program record for most home wins in a single season with seven after going 7-1-1 at Ambrose Urbanic Field during the regular season. Pitt boasts two All-ACC honorees in senior midfielder Landy Mertz (All-ACC Third Team) and defender Katie Zailski (All-ACC Freshman Team).
