MATCH PREVIEWS

The WPIAL Soccer Boys Class 3A tournament has reached the Semifinal Round, with a few surprise teams remaining, and once again a strong showing from Section 2, as we’ll once again see at least one team from that section in the Final, as South Fayette and Montour will do battle in one of the semifinal matches.

Not much will likely separate these teams as they set to do battle at North Allegheny on Monday night.

Franklin Regional pulled off the impressive road win to knock last year’s defending champs, Moon out of the bracket, while No. 2 Hampton continues to plug forward getting results though having been pushed to extra time in both wins against Trinity and Indiana.

Franklin Regional’s Lukas Peterson may have summed this classification up best following his team’s upset win vs Moon, as it might take ‘Sheer Will’ that will separate the winners from the losers in this bracket where four top programs remain.

“It was won through sheer will. It wasn’t the prettiest,” Petersen said.

“It was two top program’s slugging it out and we were just fortunate to come out on top.”

 #2 Hampton (16-2-1) vs Franklin Regional (11-7-0)

Kickoff: 6:00pm at North Allegheny

How they got here:  Hampton also needed Extra Time to defeat Trinity, 1-0, as Coleman Docherty scored the game-winner, then edged Indiana, 2-1, in Extra time as Aidan Cole and Docherty scored for the Talbots. Franklin Regional’s been the surprise team thus far, stunning Mars, with an impressive 4-0 win in the first round, then knocking out the defending Class 3A champions, Moon, on Thursday, with both goals coming from Tyler Pipon.

Backed by ‘Sheer Will’ Tyler Pipon’s brace leads Franklin Regional to upset knockout of defending WPIAL Boys Class 3A champs Moon in Extra Time

Players to Watch:

Franklin Regional’s Pipon was the go-to goal scorer in extra time win, but they have been playing much better defensively with a clean sheet against Mars, and keeping Moon in check — Noah Walker has been outstanding in goal.

Hampton — Luke Fiscus – through the regular season finale scored 32 goals, and had the assist on the playoff game-winner.

#8 South Fayette (12-4-3) at #5 Montour (15-4-0)

Kickoff: 8:00pm at North Allegheny

How they got here:

South Fayette defeated Latrobe, 4-0, then defeated No. 1 Plum, 1-0 in the Quarterfinal, thanks to making the most of a free kick chance from Adam Thompson.  Montour took care of Gateway, in impressive fashion, rolling to a 5-0 win in the first round, then in the second round, defeated Indiana, 1-0.

Players/Match-Ups to Watch:

South Fayette — Michael Plasko — was a force last Saturday as he scored all four goals in the Lions’ 4-0 win vs Latrobe. Also, goalkeeper Dylan Janoski, who plays for the Riverhounds Development Academy, had the clean sheet.  Montour — Jaxson Camp led the Spartans with 14 goals during the regular season, but it was Andrew Prunier who had the hat trick on Saturday to bring his total to 16 for the season and playoffs.

On Thompson’s game winner:  “It was a well-struck ball,” South Fayette’s Robby Eldridge told Tribune-Review‘s Jerin Steele.

“He’s been working hard all year on those and spends a decent amount of time after each practice to do that. It paid off, and I’m happy for him.”
