Preview: Taking a closer look at WPIAL Girls 2A quarterfinals

We’ve reached the final day of quarterfinal action in the WPIAL girls soccer playoffs with one more classification in play.

Ahead of Saturday’s matches in Class 2A, here’s a quick look at the match-ups.

Quarterfinal Round (Saturday, October 31)

all matches slated to start at 12 Noon at the home field of higher seed, unless noted

1 South Park vs 9 Yough

South Park is impressive to watch and see how they adapt to the game and change on the fly almost unnoticeably. They bring pressure from different angles and find their goals and suffocate you defensively. Yough will challenge South Park to be disciplined when McKenzie Pritts is on the attack for the Cougars along with Hannah Birros.

2 Shady Side Academy vs 7 Brownsville

Shady Side coach Mary Lynch has dealt with goal scoring phenoms before. Now she will have to deal with Tessa Dellarose, the UNC Commit. a technical player who has strength and balance to take on several defenders at once. SSA will look to take Dellarose away from the game and use the leadership of Georgetown Commit Melissa Riggins to get SSA into the semi finals in their first go-around in Class 2A.

3 North Catholic vs 6 Burrell (at Mars)

The word is getting out on Burrell’s freshman duo Leah Brockett and Tessa Mathabel. This young pair of goal scorers along with midfielder Jordyn Kowalkowski now provide a three headed scoring punch — leading Burrell to an 8-3 overall record this season. The defending WPIAL champs, North Catholic, are coming off a 7-0 win to open the playoffs. They will continue to look to fill up the back of the net with Georgia State Commit Jadeyn Sharpless and Grace Billmann.

We could possibly see a high scoring affair.

4 Southmoreland vs 5 Avonworth

If this game was on the books at Caesars, I would take the over. Southmoreland brings in Olivia Cernuto and Taylor Klingensmith. The two have combined for 50+ goals. Avonworth will counter with Ava Wert and her fellow Antelope attack to fill the nets. Avonworth averages 3.6 goals per game as Southmoreland averages 4.7.
