Reported by Benton Newman for Pittsburgh Soccer Now
For 105 minutes on Friday night at Lynn Family Stadium, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC did what they have done so often this season: they bent, they absorbed, and they refused to break.
Then, in stoppage time of the first extra-time period, they finally did.
Former Riverhound Tola Showunmi, on the field for barely seven minutes, finished off a feed from Amadou Dia to give Louisville a 1-0 victory and end Pittsburgh’s reign as USL Championship champions.
The Hounds had won the previous two regular season meetings with their longtime Eastern Conference rival, and for most of the night it looked like they might grind out a third. But over 120 minutes, Pittsburgh managed just five total shots and a single attempt on target. Against a Louisville side that had not lost in seven matches, that was never going to be enough to survive forever.
A Cagey First Half
Rob Vincent’s Hounds lined up in their familiar 4-4-2 across from Simon Bird’s LouCity in its regular 3-4-3. Both sides probed early without carving out a clear look, and Pittsburgh’s press soon began to disrupt Louisville’s play, leaving a frustrated LouCity defense struggling to get the ball out of its own end. In the 34th minute, Louisville’s Manny Perez and Ray Serrano each had half-chances snuffed out by the Hounds’ defense. Moments later, a press-generated loose ball in Louisville’s box required quick action from goalkeeper Ryan Schewe to keep Trevor Amann from capitalizing.
The closest call of the half came when LouCity’s Chris Donovan headed a cross goalward, only for it to strike the crossbar. With just three shots for the home side (0.19 xG) and two for the reigning champs (0.11 xG), the teams went into halftime level at 0-0.
Holding the Line
Vincent went looking for a spark at halftime, sending on Eliot Goldthorp for Sam Bassett. It was Goldthorp, the hero of the stoppage-time equalizer at Rhode Island two weeks earlier, who would produce the Riverhounds’ best scoring opportunity of the night. In the 54th minute, he headed a cross from Amann on target, forcing a diving save from Schewe.
Louisville’s potent attack answered with a long spell of heavy pressure, and Pittsburgh’s back line held firm. In the 76th minute, LouCity’s Evan Davila tested Nico Campuzano with a hard-hit shot from the edge of the box, and Campuzano expertly parried it away. Albert Dikwa replaced Amann in the 83rd minute, yet the Hounds’ attack never found a rhythm.
The match grew increasingly physical as regulation wound down. Louisville’s Kevon Lambert and Aiden McFadden were both booked late, and Goldthorp picked up a yellow of his own in the first minute of stoppage time. Vincent responded with a double change, bringing on Lasse Kelp for Perrin Barnes and Junior Etou for Charles Ahl, and the match went to extra time.
Showunmi’s Dagger
Outshot four to one in the second half of regulation, Pittsburgh spent the first period of extra time on its heels. Louisville fired four more shots before Bird’s bench delivered the decisive blow. Showunmi, who had replaced Donovan in the 99th minute, met Dia’s endline pass and put in the winning goal in stoppage time at the end of the first extra-time period (105′). It was a dagger against his former side, and it came with only the brief extra-time break standing between the Hounds and a reset.
With their season on the line, Pittsburgh pushed forward and held 62% of possession in the second period of extra time. It was the same story that had followed them all season: plenty of the ball, little bite. Neither of their two shots tested Schewe.
End of the Reign
“I asked them to leave everything out on the field, and they did that,” Vincent said after the match. Even with the sting of defeat still fresh, the Hounds coach was already looking ahead. “A lot of guys have shown a lot of growth,” he said. “I know we’ll be much better next year.”
A year after lifting the trophy, the Hounds will watch the rest of the postseason from home. For 105 minutes, they bent, absorbed, and refused to break, just as they had all season. This time, there was no late escape.
