The final tactical notes have been made.
The training pitch at AHN Montour cleared out before Noon on Thursday, and the team bus is officially rolling through the the Ohio Valley.
Following a crisp week-long training block, the defending champion Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC have packed a full traveling squad—including every player on the roster and the broader group to support from the sidelines—and headed straight to Louisville, Kentucky.
The stage is officially set for Friday night.
After closing out the regular season with a gritty 2-1 victory over Birmingham Legion FC, Rob Vincent’s squad locked up the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference (13-11-6, 45 points). Now, they prepare to face the one postseason adversary that has historically eluded them: Louisville City FC.
The Eastern Conference Quarterfinal clash kicks off this Friday, October 30 at 6:30 p.m. ET at Lynn Family Stadium, airing live on SportsNet Pittsburgh and ESPN+.
Embracing the Rivalry & the Moment
For veteran midfielder Robbie Mertz, stepping into a high-stakes postseason clash against Louisville is familiar territory, but it’s a challenge that never loses its luster. Reflecting on the matchup after Thursday’s final training session, Mertz emphasized just how special these recurring playoff chapters are.
“It doesn’t get old,” Mertz said with a smile. “It’ll be a fun one like we’ve had in the past against them. There’s a lot of history between the two clubs in the last decade or so. When you look across sports, those are the fun matchups to be a part of as a player, to be a part of as a fan… when you know those kind of rivalries exist and they show up year after year in playoff time, to be a part of that is a really cool thing.”
While Louisville enters the postseason making a league-record 12th consecutive appearance, the reigning champions carry a quiet, battle-tested swagger. Mertz noted that the team’s preparation has remained steady, anchored by core principles that have defined the club for years.
“We recognize the moment will be a little bit bigger tomorrow night,” Mertz added. “In terms of preparation, we’ve been diligent all year. It’s about preparing for this game like we have others and having that attention to detail.”
Breaking the Curse: Hounds vs. LouCity in October
For all of Pittsburgh’s growth, regular-season success over the past decade, and last year’s historic title run, Louisville City has remained the ultimate postseason roadblock and of the last stones unturned in Hounds historical success.
In three high-stakes playoff meetings across a four-year span, LouCity has broken Hounds hearts:
-
2019 Eastern Conference Semifinals: Top-seeded Pittsburgh fell 2-1 in extra time after a dramatic 118th-minute winner by Paolo DelPiccolo at Highmark Stadium.
-
2020 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals: A defensive masterclass by Louisville handed the Hounds a 2-0 shutout in Kentucky during the pandemic-shortened postseason.
-
2022 Eastern Conference Semifinals: A thrilling 2-2 deadlock through 120 minutes ended in a 5-3 penalty shootout heartbreak in Louisville.
However, 2026 has told a different story.
Road teams have traditionally dominated this series—holding a 13-5-8 record across all competitions since 2015—and Pittsburgh is the only visiting club with six total victories in Louisville.
On May 9, the Hounds became the first visiting team to record three all-time wins at Lynn Family Stadium, completing a season sweep over LouCity with a 2-0 road win and a 3-1 home victory in July.
Words from the Gaffer: Playing on the Front Foot
Speaking just moments before boarding the bus on Thursday afternoon, head coach Rob Vincent discussed how Louisville has evolved over the past month—noting particularly how Simon Elliott’s side has tightened up defensively—while outlining his own team’s tactical mandate for Friday night.
“The big thing they’ve been able to do recently is tighten up defensively and stop conceding goals,” Vincent noted. “They’re still obviously very dangerous on their home field. For us, we talked about playing on the front foot. We need to go with the mentality of trying to stay high, press high, turn them over, create doubt in their mind, and force them to have to play long.”
Vincent also stressed the importance of winning the physical and mental battles across the pitch, echoing Mertz’s sentiments on squad execution.
“It’s a game full of moments,” Vincent added. “We have to be ready to be really competitive with second balls, duels, and loose balls. We’ve had a great week of training, the guys look energetic, and we’re ready to go and show our quality.”
View from Derby City: Respect & Low-Scoring Steel in LouCity Camp
In Louisville, interim head coach Simon Bird and his squad are well aware of Pittsburgh’s championship pedigree, recognizing the challenge that the visiting titleholders bring to Lynn Family Stadium.
“They went on an incredible run in the playoffs and went and won the whole thing. So we know that they’re a team that knows how to win, knows how to play playoff games,” Bird told local reporters this week. “But I would say we’ve had a very similar run, obviously, in the USL Cup this year to them. It should be a really good matchup, and we’re excited to be at home for it and excited to be in the playoffs.”
For LouCity captain and defender Kyle Adams, the expectation is a tight, low-scoring grind where defensive resilience will dictate the winner—a blueprint similar to how both clubs have navigated their recent run-ins.
“I think the games that we’ve played in the last six, eight weeks have all been similar, where we know it’s probably going to be a goal,” Adams said. “So it’s just about keeping it tight at the back. Hopefully we can find one at the other end to relieve some pressure off us.”
Bird added that starting fast in front of a raucous home crowd will be central to Louisville’s match plan:
“We want to start the game well, and we want the crowd to get into the game… Now it’s here and we want to take advantage of it and play with no fear, play with confidence and go into the game with our chest out and give the fans something to cheer about.”
