WPIAL Boys Soccer Standings (9/5/2022)

It’s been a little more than a week since the start of boys high school soccer season.

Labor Day will provide a day off from the match schedule, but teams will resume with section play this coming week.  Only a one section and schools didn’t start section play last week (Class 1A, Section 4 primarily).

With the boys section schedule using the Tuesday-Thursday rotation early in the season, this week will be a busy one as most teams will play at least two section matches, with a few additional section matches coming on Saturday.

We are not big proponents of rankings, and you should not expect to see any formal rankings from Pittsburgh Soccer Now (although we did post a ‘players and teams to watch’ post for both boys and girls at the start of the season. The rationle here is that it’s really unfair to the teams who we have not seen, as the greatest indicator of how good teams are comes with actually watching them and the old-fashioned ‘eye-ball test’.

Match-Up To Watch:  Mars vs North Catholic

This week’s match-up to watch will be a potential new rivalry between neighboring Mars and North Catholic, who will play each other for the first time as section foes on Tuesday.

Remember, this is a section that has produced the last two Class 3A State champions, and it will be a grind again this season.

The 2020 WPIAL and PIAA champions, Mars, have started off the season with a tough loss to section rival Hampton, then struggled in their own tournament against some tough competition (4A Allderdice & Fairview).  North Catholic are stepping up in classification after being Class 2A runner-up in 2021.
