The Riverhounds SC reverted to a familiar formula for success, scoring early, then locking down the Tampa Bay Rowdies with a masterful defensive performance in a 1-0 win before another sellout crowd of 5,490 fans at Highmark Stadium on Saturday night.

Riverhounds return to familiar formula to top Tampa Bay, 1-0, to build on first place lead

With the win, Pittsburgh (12-4-8 | W-L-D, 44 points) further solidified its grip on first place in the USL Championship’s Eastern Conference standings, moving six points clear of the third place Rowdies, and five points ahead of second place Charleston (39 points).

“It was important, against a dangerous, attacking team like Tampa, to get the early goal and shutout. The guys responded well,” Riverhounds Head Coach Bob Lilley said.

“It was a better overall performance than some of the recent ones.  I would have liked to seen us go after it more after the first goal, but overall it’s a great result.”

After the previous three matches, which the Hounds fell behind by two goals in the first half, it was satisfying for them to turn the tables, and come out with an early goal.

“The last five games, the start hasn’t been good, and that’s something we needed to fix,” Dikwa said.

“We did that today, but something we can control is to keep attacking because I feel like after we score, we sit back a little bit. That’s something we have to improve.”
