Match Preview
Class 4A – Norwin vs Plum – It’s a battle of last two teams unbeaten in Section 1. Last season was a magical, Cinderella finish for Norwin — going from being the No. 8 seed in an eight-team Class 4A and winning the postseason knockout WPIAL tournament. Though the Knights lost some key players, like Owen Christopher, who is at Pitt now, they still have some solid players returning, including senior Daniel Maddock, who scored some key goals in the championship run. Thus far through first half of the season, the Knights (6-3-0 overall, 4-0-0) are unbeaten in section play while they have not shied away from tough competition, playing (and losing) against tough but close out of section contests (to North Allegheny, Seneca Valley and Peters Township). Plum h (7-0-2, 4-0-0) as moved up to Class 4A and have also not backed down — played a rigorous early non-conference schedule (posting draws vs Upper St Clair and North Allegheny and beating Peters Township).
Here’s what the coaches are saying:
“It’s going to be an electrifying night as WPIAL reigning champions come to Plum. It will be a great evening of soccer and hopefully the fans are entertained,” Raf Kolankowski, Plum Head Coach said.
“They’re always tough to play. They have a lot of good players, and (Norwin HC) Scotty (Schuchert) always has them ready to play. This will be a tough game for us, but I believe we’re ready for the challenge.”
Through the early season, Schuchert has seen his team get better.
“The team has shown a lot of growth over the past couple of weeks,” Schuchert told Pittsburgh Soccer Now.
“Excited to see how we respond against another top team in the WPIAL.”
