Riverhounds sign former Georgetown standout MF Max Viera

Riverhounds SC has signed former Georgetown University midfielder Max Viera for the upcoming USL Championship season with a club option for 2027.  The deal is pending USL and U.S. Soccer approval.
Viera, 21, is coming off a senior season in which he had three goals and four assists while helping guide the Hoyas to a second straight Big East Championship before advancing to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
“Max attended our Invitational Combine in December and stood out with his ability to create goal-scoring opportunities from the wing back position,” Dan Visser, Riverhounds’ Sporting Director, said.
“He earned his roster spot during preseason, and we’re excited to see his continued development this year.”
As a junior in 2024, Viera was named the Big East Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player as the Hoyas won the conference for the first time in three years. For his career, Viera appeared in 81 total matches for Georgetown, recording seven goals and 11 assists.
Hailing from Chicago, Viera played his youth soccer in the Chicago Fire Academy. He was a two-year captain for the Fire, who won the MLS Next Under-19 Championship with Viera in the squad in 2021, and he also made two senior-level appearances in MLS Next Pro with Chicago Fire 2.

John K’s Thoughts on Signing of Max Viera

The Riverhounds can never quite have enough midfielders.

When looking up and down the Riverhounds’ roster in recent years, versatility and depth at midfield position has always been important.

The addition of Max Viera, a 21-year-old playmaking midfielder, right out of college is par for the course.

The Hounds have stocked up on former Big East players in the past couple of seasons.  Guillaume Vacter, Beto Ydrach, Jorge Garcia are still with the team, plus Jason Bourgey, who was on the team last year —  and you can go all the way back to Danny Griffin (Providence) to see that Big East talent keeps finding its way to Pittsburgh.

Viera impressed the coaching staff during the preseason.  The Hounds have lacked consistent production and playmaking from the width in the past few years, but Viera’s skill set suggests that the Hounds’ are hoping to have more players who can be dynamic out wide and generate more goal scoring chances.  Viera also possesses leadership traits and has a Championship pedigree, having been a captain for Chicago Fire U19 squad and as a four-year letter winner for a two-time Big East Champiosnhip winning Hoyas squad.

With 23 players signed, all but one being field players, all but one being field players, the next signing announcements are likely going to be additional goalkeepers, as Nico Campuzano remains the only signed keeper on the squad.
