Riverhounds sign former Villanova, Philadelphia Union II goalkeeper Mike Sheridan

As reported by both Pittsburgh Soccer Now and Philadelphia Soccer Now at the beginning of the Riverhounds’ preseason training camp in late January, one of the goalkeepers brought on board was Mike Sheridan.

On Tuesday, the club made it official, that Sheridan would be a Riverhound.

The former Philadelphia Union II and Villanova University standout has signed a deal with the Hounds for this upcoming season with a club option for 2027. The deal is pending USL and U.S. Soccer approval.
Sheridan, 24, spent the past two seasons with Union II, where he made 12 appearances and recorded a pair of clean sheets for the MLS Next Pro team after making his professional debut in March 2024.
“Mike came highly recommended by trusted sources, and he impressed us with his performances during preseason. He’ll be an excellent addition to our goalkeeping group this season,” Dan Visser, Riverhounds Sporting Director said through the team’s release.
Sheridan began his college career at Saint Joseph’s College (Maine), where he was named the 2022 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Year after allowing only 14 goals in 19 games with five shutouts and sharing another three combined clean sheets.
A native of the Philadelphia suburb of Folsom, Pa., Sheridan transferred close to home for his final college season in 2023 at Villanova, where he was a teammate of Hounds midfielder Jorge Garcia.

John K’s Thoughts on Signing Announcements of Goalkeepers Mike Sheridan and Mitch Budler

The Riverhounds goalkeeping room officially has been filled for the season.

Of the three keepers, it’s all but certain that former Pitt standout Nico Campuzano will start the season as the team’s primary keeper, as he’ll be tasked with filling the large shoes left by Eric Dick.

With the opportunity to work with Jon Busch as the team’s goalkeepers coach, both Sheridan and rookie Mitch Budler will have their chances to prove themselves through the course of a long season where they’ll have to be ready to jump into the spotlight when the call comes — either as a back-up during a match or when starting opportunities come available in the league or in Open Cup or USL Cup competitions.

Sheridan’s journey to the Philadelphia Union organization is unorthodox but not completely unprecedented coming out of the West Chester United organization. He’s the third goalkeeper to play with the team and turn pro.

Like current New York Red Bulls goalkeeper and West Chester United alum AJ Marcucci before him, Sheridan took a route through NCAA Division III soccer.
