Picked 11th in loaded ACC, Pitt Men’s Soccer enters 2026 season as an underdog; Niklas Sørensen named to preseason watch list

The Atlantic Coast Conference released its 2026 Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll, and the league’s head coaches are taking a clear wait-and-see approach with Jay Vidovich’s revamped squad.

Coming off an unusually quiet 2025 campaign that saw the Panthers miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018, Pitt was picked 11th out of 15 teams in the voting.

While a lower placement might raise eyebrows for a program that reached two College Cups and four national quarterfinals in recent years, it speaks directly to the absurd density of talent across the ACC—where four programs sit inside the national Preseason Top 25 (NC State at No. 2, Stanford at No. 9, Virginia at No. 11, and SMU at No. 15).

Despite adding high-caliber transfers like Big Ten standout Caden Grabfelder and UCLA’s Ethan Pendleton, Vidovich’s core will have to earn its respect the hard way through one of the most demanding conference slates in college sports.

Spotlight: Niklas Sørensen Named ACC Player to Watch

While the team as a whole begins the fall outside the league’s top tier, junior defender Niklas Sørensen earned individual recognition by being named to the 2026 ACC Preseason Watch List.

Sørensen, an MLS SuperDraft selection who sharpened his game over the summer alongside goalkeeper Jack Moxom featuring for Riverhounds Two, will be expected to anchor the Pitt backline. His physical presence, positional maturity, and distribution out of the back will be instrumental if the Panthers are to outperform their preseason projection.

Looking Ahead to the Opener

Pitt opens the 2026 regular season at home on Thursday, August 20, against Big Ten contender Maryland.
