Here’s the WPIAL girls soccer scoreboard for the final Monday of the regular season.
There were still some teams battling for playoff spots and section titles.
Taking claim of yet another section title, Norwin beat rival contenders Penn-Trafford, 4-1. As PSN contributor Ed Rosensteel pointed out, it was a ‘Pitt-trick’ tonight as all three Pitt women’s soccer recruits scored including Eva Frankovic scoring twice, while Kate Kauffman converted a penalty kick and Lacey Bernick rounded out Norwin’s big night.
There were a few other interesting battles for fourth place going down in 3A.
First, in Section 1, Gateway beat Franklin Regional 3-0, as the teams now finish in a deadlock, both 7-7 in section, and 8-8 overall, and both will advance to the playoffs.
In Section 4, Ambridge edged out Central Valley in the standings after a 3-1 win on Monday. Ambridge finishes 6-5-1 and jumped ahead of South Fayette (6-6), to finish third in section.
IN CASE YOU DIDN’T KNOW: HERE’S THE WPIAL TIE-BREAKER RULES
In the cases of ties in the standings, just in case you weren’t aware, here are the WPIAL’s tiebreaker rules:
The top (4) four teams and ties that CANNOT be broken in each classification will enter the
WPIAL tournament. All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the following method: Three (3) points for a win, one (1) point for a tie. Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and each will be declared champions and will receive a section winner’s plaque. Those teams will enter the tournament; and if the teams tied for first play equal the maximum for sectional qualification, NO OTHER TEAMS WILL BE ENTERED INTO THE TOURNAMENT.
In classifications with four (4) or fewer sections, if three teams are tied for first, the second-place team will enter as the fourth section representative. In the event of a tie for second, third, or in some cases fourth place, the Tie Breaker System will be employed. If a tie persists, head-to-head competition will determine the qualifier. In the event of a multiple tie, the following tie breaker will be employed:
1. Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
2. The team that has the best won/loss record in head-to-head competition among the tied teams
only will be the qualifier.
3. If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter the tournament.
