Pittsburgh Soccer Weekly Planner: Local rivalry matches highlight start of men’s college season

While it was a busy soccer schedule in the Pittsburgh area last week, things really start to ramp up over the course of the next week.

The men’s Division college teams are back in action beginning Thursday, when the men’s edition of the City Game game between Pitt and Duquesne returns for the second time this calendar year (if you recall, Pitt and Duquesne renewed the series during the 2020-21 extended season in February due to COVID-19).  As a double-dose of local and regional men’s soccer excitement, Robert Morris will begin its season on Thursday by hosting West Virginia at North Athletic Complex.

Pitt’s women’s team will be hosting the first game of a rare men’s and women’s doubleheader at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Thursday night (at 6 pm) when they face Cleveland State.  Robert Morris and Duquesne women’s teams look for their second wins of the season with games on Thursday (RMU  travels to St. Bonaventure) and Friday (Dukes host Valpo).

The Riverhounds are on the road this weekend (at Hartford) while Pittsburgh City United FC will play its first-ever home game, after an impressive debut last week in Maryland, winning in their UPSL debut.

There are more games on Saturday and Sunday on the college slate, highlighted by another cross-town rivalry as Duquesne and Robert Morris men’s teams will do battle at Rooney Field on Sunday night.

Pitt and West Virginia men’s soccer will continue its Backyard Brawl rivalry as the teams will clash in Morgantown on Monday evening.

Also, look for us to begin ramping up our WPIAL coverage next week, as the high school season officially kicks off on Friday, September 3.
