WPIAL Girls Soccer Daily Preview (8/26/2024)

Let the sprint begin!

High School soccer season officially began over the weekend, but starting today, on the Girls side, the stakes get higher, as WPIAL (PIAA’s District 7) section play begins within most classifications, except for Class 4A.

Among some of the key matches on Monday that we’ll be keeping close tabs on?

  • How about Plum and Franklin Regional, two perennial contenders in Class 3A meeting in the Section 4 opener.  This will also be the season opener for Plum, while Franklin Regional took on Thomas Jefferson, losing 3-1, at the Moe Rosensteel Memorial Kickoff Classic on Saturday.

  • In Class 1A, Riverview surprised many with a Section title and WPIAL/PIAA runner up finishes, but they’ll have to move on from Lola Abraham, who is now at Pitt, and they’ll be facing the team that they went neck-to-neck with in section and played three times last year, Greensburg Central Catholic.
  • Fox Chapel, the defending Class 4A champions, will begin their first match in Class 3A action, by hosting Shaler.  The Foxes opened the season on Friday, defeating neighboring Class 2A Shady Side Academy, 2-0.
