WPIAL Boys Soccer Featured Match Capsules / Previews

For the first time this season, we have a full slate of WPIAL Boys section matches across all classifications, as the season really starts to click into full gear.

Looking over tonight’s schedule, here are a few matches we’ll be monitoring closely.

Peters Township @PTHSSoccer (2-1-1, 0-0-0) vs Mt. Lebanon @Lebo_Soccer (3-2-0, 0-0-0) — traditional ‘South’ Section 2 rivals will meet up for the first time this season as both have been up and down in non-section play thus far this season.  The Blue Devils (3-2-0) split their East-West Classic matches on the first weekend (losing to Wilson, 3-2, but defeating Fleetwood, 5-1).  Mt. Lebanon returns 15 seniors from a squad that reached the WPIAL playoffs a year ago at a number seven overall seed, but were defeated in the first round to North Allegheny.   Leading the way in their win last week against South Fayette, Jack O’Brien scored twice for the Blue Devils.  Peters Township, led by longtime Head Coach Bobby Dyer are always a perennial contender and this year should be no exception, with seniors Parker Weiss, Caden Hensler and Jeven Kelly leading the way.  Through four matches, Peters looked strong out of the gate, beating Bethel Park and defending Class 4A champs, Norwin, by 8-0 margin, but in the past two matches, they lost, 1-0, to Plum and drew, 1-1, vs Trinity.   Now, the stakes are higher as both teams enter section play with something to prove.

Shady Side Academy (1-0-1, 1-0-1) vs Burrell (2-0-0, 2-0-0) – Looking up and down across all four classifications, Class 2A Section 1 should be a pretty intense battle for supremacy through the regular season, as the Bulldogs and Bucs are likely going to be in a fight with some other quality teams, including Freeport and Deer Lakes.

SSA are off to a decent start, as Ed Ellsworth’s teams sometimes don’t always begin the season like gangbusters, playing Freeport to a 1-1 draw, then bouncing back with a win in Extra Time against Deer Lakes.  Led by junior midfielder  Mark Bence, Jr., the Bulldogs will once again be strong in the middle of the field and will look to possess. After moving back up to Class 2A this year, Burrell, a state playoff qualifier in Class A last year but graduated eight seniors, have five starters back, led by midfielder Billy Kowalkowski and striker Vincent Guerrini.  Thus far, they have rolled to a pair of confidence boosting section wins vs Leechberg and Valley, by a combined 16-2 margin.   Now, they’ll get their first real section test.
