WPIAL Girls Soccer Match Capsules / Preview (9/7/2024)

On the third Saturday of the High School girls soccer season, will feature all non-conference/non-section matches, with numerous cross-section contests, among those include:

  • Class 1A defending WPIAL champs, Freedom, will playing up against Class 3A Oakland Catholic — as that match will be played at Rooney Field (at 4 p.m.).  Oakland Catholic (0-3-0) will be looking for their first win this season, while Freedom (2-2-0 overall | 1-1-0 in section) looks to bounce back from a non-conference loss to Ambridge earlier in the week.
  • Class 2A defending champs Avonworth (2-2-1 overall | 2-0-0 in section) continue to go outside the WPIAL for out-of-section contests, as they now face another District 10 team, Mercyhurst Prep.  Last week, Avonworth lost to Erie Cathedral Prep in their tournament.
  • Two regular contenders and Section champs in recent years in Class 2A, and teams with plenty of talent on both sides, South Park and Mt. Pleasant will also kick off in the morning. as they have both played challenging non-section schedules thus far and off to good starts in Section play. Mt. Pleasant (3-0-0 | 1-0-0 in section) defeated Class 3A Kiski Area, 4-0, to open the season, then topped Knoch in another non-section match. Featuring for Mt. Pleasant including a handful of experienced upperclassman, Rylin Bugosh, Morgan Gesinski, Caitlyn Fullman, Raygan Mizikar, Maddie Barrick and keeper Laurel Rummel. South Park are off to  3-2-0 overall start, with no troubles in section, but have losses to Burrell (3-1) and District 10 Erie McDowell (1-0). Returning, experienced players to watch include Alicia Riberich, Emily Mihelcic, Taylor Vargo, Brooke Paylo, Arianna Beck and Gianna Cardillo. The Eagles won 17 games last year and made the WPIAL semifinals and PIAA quarterfinals.
