Match Day Previews

There’s only one section match and mostly non-conference/out of section contests on the WPIAL high school girls soccer schedule on Saturday.

Here’s a look at a couple of intriguing match-ups on Saturday.

Class 2A – Beaver Area at Ambridge – it’s been a great start to the season for Beaver Area girls, as they’re without a loss or a tie (5-0-0 overall, 2-0-0 in section 3), as they’ve posted two signature wins that would have everyone else around Class 2A take notice, beating secton rival Avonworth, 1-0, then going out of section on Thursday, to top South Park, 3-1.  In beating three-time defending WPIAL champs, Avonworth, Bobcats senior Sydney Chontos scored the lone goal, with an assist from Jocelyn Biela. Goalkeeper Cali Coups earned her fourth clean sheet in four games.  A season ago, with a younger, more inexperienced squad, the Bobcats finished fourth in a section with three-time defending WPIAL champions Avonworth, another perennial contender in North Catholic and another solid up-and-coming squad in Quaker Valley.    Both Quaker Valley and Ambridge are off to a undefeated starts in section play.  Ambridge (4-4-0 overall, 1-2 in section 3) have some quality results this season, with Megan Conover leading the way including back-to-back wins in beating defending Class 1A champs Freedom and West Mifflin, and they posted an exciting section win, beating Hopewell, 3-2, in extra time, with Conover getting a hat trick.

Class 4A – Non Section – North Allegheny vs Upper St. Clair – it’s a non-section heavyweight clash between two programs that have lots of talented players.  North Allegheny has won three WPIAL titles in the past five years, and were runner-up a year ago.  As they do each year, they test themselves with non-WPIAL and tough out of section matches, and this is no exception, stepping out toe face one of the most talented teams in the top classification in Upper St. Clair.  North Allegheny (4-2-0 overall, 2-1 in section 3), bounced back from an earlier week section 1-0 loss to rival Pine-Richland, by defeating Allderdice 3-0. The Tigers have a balanced attack and a deep roster.  Among players to watch include junior Emma Schupansky and senior Madison Miller leading the forward line and experienced keeper, senior Margaret Nestor in goal. On Wednesday vs the Dragons, Isabella Costa, Mia Bosley and Kieran Shannon each scored.

A season ago, Upper St Clair were a very young but talented team that came up just short of reaching the WPIAL Final.  This season, they’re lead by an impressive group of players including All-state player Sierra Dupre (Hounds Academy / USYNT) and along with Mary Mascaro (recent Kent State commit), Natalia DiSora, Ellie Shanholtzer and Cameryn Friday. The Panthers (4-0-2 overall, 1-0-2 in section) are without a loss this season, but learning quickly that section play will be a grind, having played two draws earlier this week vs rivals Canon-McMillan and Peters Township.
