Match Day Previews

There’s only a few section matches, with most of them coming in Class 2A (while there is one 3A clash between Montour-Chartiers Valley), with the rest of the scheduling consisting of non-conference/out of section contests on the WPIAL high school boys soccer schedule on Saturday.

Here’s a look at a couple of intriguing match-ups on Saturday.

Class 2A – Section 1 – Shady Side Academy vs North Catholic – it’s early in the season, but this is an important match for both teams as they jockey for position at the top of Section 1 table.  Since losing two of its first three matches of the season, the first to Class 4A North Allegheny (3-1 in at JRK Memorial Classic and a 1-0 loss at Deer Lakes, the Trojans are starting to find their form, culminating with a dominant 5-0 effort against Shady Side on Tuesday. In that win, Arthur Mendonca had a brace while Brody Kennedy picked up a pair of assists.   In a strange schedule twist, the two schools will face each other again four days later in what has to be one of the earliest return matches we’ve seen on WPIAL soccer section schedule.

Cross-Section (3A v 2A) – Deer Lakes vs Mars – speaking of Deer Lakes, they’ll step up in class to take on Mars on Saturday in what should be a good test for both sides.

The Lancers are part of that Class 2A Section 1 top of the table group, with their only blemishes this season coming in an extra time battle vs rival Shady Side (2-1 loss) and to Class 4A North Hills.  Otherwise, the Lancers (6-2-0 overall, 4-1 in section) who have a strong junior class of players who were instrumental in the 2022 WPIAL title, have posted impressive wins vs North Catholic, Class 4A Fox Chapel and Burrell. That group of juniors for Deer Lakes includes attacking duo Collin Rodgers and Peyton Kushon, plus goalkeeper Wesley Boyle and midfielder Zane Spence.

Under Head Coach Chris Knauff, Mars (5-1-1 overall, 3-1-1 in section) are in their usual position, at the top of its section in Class 3A, however they’ll be looking to bounce back to what was a somewhat surprising 1-0 loss on Thursday to Armstrong.  Mars boasts senior midfielder, Zach Angoff, who can be used as midfielder or forward and junior Max Davis.
