Final Scoreboard: WPIAL Girls Soccer Class 1A Quarterfinal Round

WPIAL (PIAA District 7)  soccer playoffs resumed Saturday with Boys 4A and Girls 2A/1A teams in action.

Here’s our thread for GIRLS CLASS 1A as the four matches saw the intensity and level of play ramp up to an even higher level as the stakes got higher with spots in the semifinal round at stake.

Advancing to the semifinals, No. 1 seed Springdale continued its strong form, defeating the defending champs, Freedom, in convincing fashion, 5-0.

The No. 3 seed, Bentworth, were not able to slow down No. 6 Winchester Thurston, who raced to an impressive 4-0 win in the upset.  Earlier in the morning, Sewickely edged Aquinas Academy, 1-0, while the action concluded when No. 2. Seton LaSalle cruised to a 4-0 win over last season’s runner up, Riverview.

Match Day Notes

While the top seed, Springdale, cruised to its first round win, the rest of the field jumped right into tight, intense contests on Tuesday as three matches went the distance, including two penalty kick shootouts and another golden goal in extra time.

The WPIAL soccer committee awarded the top four seeds in order of Section title winners including:  Springdale (13-1), Bentworth (15-1), Seton LaSalle (12-2-2) and Eden Christian (8-7-1).

Eden Christian were the only top four seed to be eliminated in the first round, as No. 13 seed Aquinas edged out a penalty kick shootout win to advance.

Last year’s finalists Freedom and Riverview are lurking in the middle of the pack with relatively younger squads this season — and both survived first round challenges.

Freedom’s title defense will get put to the test when they face No. 1 Springdale, with the classification’s most dangerous one-two scoring punch, Bri Ross (leading all scorers in 1A with 31 goals adding to her career over 100) and Molly Hurley.

Bentworth has only one loss, to section rival Chartiers-Houston on Sept. 18. Head Coach Tyler Hamstra’s squads always compete hard and this year has been no exception with a senior laden squad.  Hamstra told Pittsburgh Soccer Now that his team took really big steps in the second half of the season and that his team has found an identity.

The ‘Cats were tested in the first round, as OLSH took them the distance, in a match decided by another shootout.

Now, Bentworth will face a Winchester Thurston side that didn’t have too much trouble beating Bentworth’s rival, Chartiers-Houston, 4-0, in the first round.

Seton LaSalle are a hot team — having won 10 of its last 11 matches in the homestretch including their first round playoff, 2-0, over Ellis School. Now, the Rebels will face Riverview.

Sewickley Academy, who finished second to the Rebels in the same section, extended its win streak to six matches with a 2-0 win against Riverside in the first round, will now face the upstart Aquinas Academy.
