In a match that on paper presented a massive opportunity, Pittsburgh instead becomes the first team in USL Championship history to fall to winless expansion side Sporting Club Jacksonville.

“I think, honestly, we just were not good enough in the second half. We’re at a real crossroads at this point. We need to find a way to be better and find a way to kill games off when we have the opportunity. We had the goal disallowed, we had Trevor’s goal, and we allowed them very little in the first half. But we know Jacksonville generally scores at home, and we knew they weren’t going to lie down. I’m bitterly disappointed in the second half. It just wasn’t good enough.”

The Hounds controlled the tempo early on and held a deserved 1-0 lead at the break courtesy of Trevor Amann’s clinical 29th-minute strike.

But the second half collapsed into a nightmare of poor defensive positioning and brutal luck.

Jacksonville, playing with desperate passion, emerged from the locker room flying in transition. The equalizer came in the 51st minute when Kieran Sadlier found space in the box and beat Nico Campuzano.

The knife to the heart came in the 78th minute when a quick Jacksonville transition led to a heavily deflected shot, hitting defender Victor Souza and bouncing into his own net as an own goal.

Despite a solid performance from Eliot Goldthorp, who created four total chances on the night and hit the post with a free kick, the Hounds couldn’t find the savior.

It marks Pittsburgh’s second consecutive league defeat, both coming against expansion clubs, dropping crucial points in the race for the top of the table.

Next up, the Hounds will have a quick turnaround, having to face rival Louisville City in a nationally televised match on Saturday at Noon, at FNB Stadium.

Amann the Difference Maker: The whistle blows for halftime, and the Riverhounds hold a deserved 1-0 lead at Hodges Stadium!

Despite the sweltering Florida heat and a heavily depleted roster missing four key figures, Rob Vincent’s tactical adjustments have worked beautifully.

Playing as target forward in Albert Dikwa’s absence, Trevor Amann has been a constant menace to the Jacksonville backline.

Amann thought he had the opener early in the 12th minute when he slotted one home, but the linesman’s flag went up to wipe it out for offside. He wouldn’t be denied a second time, however.

In the 29th minute, Eliot Goldthorp found Amann with a precise pass into the center of the box, and Amann buried a clinical right-footed shot into the bottom right corner to break the deadlock.

Jacksonville has pressed for an equalizer, forcing Hounds goalkeeper Nico Campuzano (starting in net) into a smart save in the 42nd minute to deny Raheem Somersall from distance.

Fresh off an encouraging 2-0 shutout victory against Loudoun United FC in their USL Cup group finale, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC return to USL Championship regular-season action tonight with a daunting trip down south for what could clearly be a trap match-up.

This match is the official kickoff to a two-match league gauntlet over the next few dasy that be the latest test of the Riverhounds’ squad depth. Following tonight’s clash, the Hounds have a quick turnaround to host Louisville City FC at F.N.B. Stadium on Saturday at Noon — in a match that will be played on National TV broadcast (CBS).

Storylines to Watch:

• Depth Under Fire: The Hounds’ roster depth is being stretched. In addition to serving a suspension, the squad will be missing three key figures:

  • Sam Bassett (Foot) – OUT: The dynamic midfielder, who scored a brilliant goal against Jacksonville earlier this season, will miss out due to a foot injury.

  • Bradley Sample (Core) – OUT: The reliable defensive midfielder is sidelined with a core muscle injury.

  • Beto Ydrach (Hernia) – OUT: The crucial championship-winning defender is out after undergoing hernia rehabilitation. The timetable has been mid-Summer so we could be expecting to see Beto back soon.

• The Dikwa Disruption: While Rob Vincent unlocked a twin target-forward partnership with Albert Dikwa and Trevor Amann both scoring against Loudoun, the Hounds are forced to throw that blueprint out the window for this match. Dikwa is serving a mandatory league suspension tonight following his straight red card for violent conduct in the chaotic 76th minute of the July 4 loss to Brooklyn. How does Vincent adjust after finding such great fluidity with the duo on Saturday?

• Amann Flies Solo: With Dikwa and also one of the other heroes from the previous win vs Jackson, Sam Bassett out, the goal-scoring burden will fall on Trevor Amann and, who will most likely reclaim his post as the lone target forward. Amann was a constant nuisance against Loudoun, drawing the penalty and showing great aggression. But without Dikwa to draw away opposing center-backs, Jacksonville’s defensive line will have to deal with whatever new wrinkle the Hounds throw there way.

 

• Navigating the Trap: Jacksonville is going to throw absolute kitchen sinks at the Hounds to secure that elusive first win. In their previous meeting on March 28 at F.N.B. Stadium, the Hounds narrowly escaped with a 3-2 win after leading 2-0 at the half. Jacksonville has shown they can score and put pressure on Pittsburgh’s transition defense. Nico Campuzano (likely starter in goal) and the backline must be incredibly disciplined to avoid an early ambush.
