They battled until the final whistle, but the script remained unreversed.

Steel City FC’s historic, undefeated season came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday evening, as they fell 2-1 to powerhouse Flint City Bucks in a grueling USL League Two Round of 16 (Central Conference Final) matchup at Atwood Stadium.

A dramatic 89th-minute strike from Nathan Prex gave the visitors a late lifeline and sparked a frantic stoppage-time push for an equalizer. However, the Great Forest Division champions couldn’t quite climb out of a two-goal deficit forged by Flint City’s clinical counter-attacks.

The defeat marks the first loss of the summer for Steel City (10W-1L-3D) and represents the only match all season in which their otherwise ironclad defense surrendered more than one goal

How It Happened

First Half

As expected in a high-stakes rematch of last year’s 4-3 thriller, the intensity was electric from the opening whistle. Flint City brought their signature aggressive, front-foot pressure, but Steel City’s midfield shape held firm early, trading punches and looking to build through their possession lines.

The breakthrough came a half-hour into the match. In the 30th minute, Flint City’s dangerous midfielder Oliver Moller-Jensen cut inside from the right edge of the penalty area. Navigating the top of the box, he unleased a low, skidding shot that managed to navigate its way through a heavily crowded penalty box, beating keeper Josh Lane to put the hosts up 1-0.

Second Half 

Head Coach Dan Brower looked to inject fresh energy into the flanks immediately at the break, subbing on Tayshaun Reid for Sean Regan. The tactical shift opened the game up significantly, with both teams exchanging quality chances in an expansive, end-to-end second half.

As Steel City began committing more numbers forward in search of an equalizer, the Bucks capitalized. In the 77th minute, Flint City caught the visitors on a lethal counter-attack. A dangerous ball was played into the edge of the goal box, where Jordy Lopez managed to just beat a rushing Josh Lane to the ball, slotting it home to double the Bucks’ advantage.

Despite the crushing second blow, Steel City refused to fold.

Brower utilized his bench effectively, sending on a wave of attacking substitutes, including Sander Rynning and Nathan Prex.

The relentless pressure paid off in the 89th minute. Getting on the end of a late attacking sequence, Prex delivered a clinical finish to pull Steel City within one.

The goal ignited a chaotic, high-pressure stoppage time period as Steel City threw everyone forward, but the Bucks’ veteran backline held firm until the final whistle.
