The ultimate test of championship mettle has arrived.

Forty-eight hours after capturing the club’s first-ever USL League Two postseason victory, undefeated Steel City FC (10-0-3) will square off tonight against a familiar, formidable giant. Waiting for them in the Central Conference Final (Round of 16) are Flint City Bucks (11-1-1).

Kickoff is slated for Sunday at 7 PM ET (UPDATED AND CONFIRMED AT ATWOOD STADIUM).

Reflecting on Friday’s historic 1-0 win over Northern Indiana FC, Steel City Head Coach Dan Brower praised his roster’s execution and tactical adaptability under unusual circumstances, which saw the match moved indoors to Brighton, Michigan, due to Canadian wildfire smoke.

“Very mature performance from the guys,” Brower told Pittsburgh Soccer Now.

“We faced some adversity playing the match indoors in difficult conditions and the boys handled things extremely well. We started sharp, and in the opening period… we were able to create some high-quality chances but unfortunately weren’t able to capitalize.”

Brower noted that Northern Indiana adjusted by dropping early into a lower defensive block, but the team’s relentless patience eventually paid off in the 63rd minute with a majestic 18-pass buildup culminating in a Nick Graeca cutback to Johan Nissen-Lie for the first-time clinical finish.

“With close to 600 passes throughout the match, we were able to showcase our patience and quality,” Brower added.

“The repress was fantastic throughout… allowing us to win the ball higher up the pitch. Now, looking to knock off USL2’s league ‘darlings’ is exactly why someone comes to play for Steel City. We very much look forward to this rematch.”

Scouting Report: Flint City Bucks

The Bucks earned their ticket to Sunday’s final by dispatching FC Buffalo 2-0 on Friday night. Mirroring Steel City’s situation, their match was also moved indoors to Brighton, where the raucous Flint fan base traveled and created a wall of noise.

• The Tactical Identity: True to Brower’s assessment, Flint City is an aggressive, powerful team that plays squarely on the front foot from the opening whistle. They do not look to sit in low blocks; they look to overwhelm their opponents with numbers in transition and apply immediate physical pressure.
