Pitt overcomes early turnover to defeat Cornell 2-1, extends unbeaten run to four

The Pitt Panthers displayed composure under pressure on Sunday afternoon at Berman Field, coming from behind in the second half to secure a 2-1 victory over the Cornell Big Red. With second-half strikes from Katie Ellermeyer and Sofia Doheny, Ben Waldrum’s squad notched its second consecutive win, extending its unbeaten streak to four matches and moving to 4-1-1 overall as the non-conference slate enters its final stretch.

Pitt dictated early territorial possession in the opening half, but a critical lapse in build-up play allowed Cornell to strike first in the 12th minute. Junior midfielder Lauren DiPierri intercepted a central Pitt pass near the midfield circle and immediately launched a rapid transition sequence. Senior forward Alanna Colbert collected the turn and drove deep into the right channel before sliding a crisp pass across the top of the box. Co-captain Emily Gibbons finished cleanly, sending a left-footed strike past Pitt goalkeeper Elli Johnson to give the hosts the early advantage. The Panthers pressed hard for an immediate response, tilting the pitch through set pieces and wide entries. Pitt nearly found the equalizer right before halftime when Adi Bianchin unleashed a curling effort in the closing minutes, but her shot rattled off the post, keeping Cornell ahead 1-0 at the break.

Coming out of the interval, Pitt elevated its line of engagement and forced high turnovers inside the Cornell third. The breakthrough came quickly in the 51st minute when aggressive entries into the 18-yard box earned Pitt a penalty kick. Katie Ellermeyer stepped up to the dot and calmly slotted her strike past Big Red freshman keeper Sofia Kerrigan, snapping her scoreless streak at 151 minutes and drawing the Panthers level at 1-1.

Pitt continued to turn up the physical intensity and sustained momentum through fluid wide combination play. That pressure paid off in the 67th minute when Sage Stelzer played a high-ceiling diagonal ball across the face of the 18. Lola Abraham tracked it down near the far post, cushioning a soft tap back into the central channel for Sofia Doheny, who arrived right on time to smash home her first goal of the season and the second of her career. Pitt’s defensive core held firm over the final 20 minutes, managing high-pressing triggers and clearing set-piece service to lock in the 2-1 road win.
