WPIAL / PIAA Boys High School Soccer Daily Report (Sept 24): Thursday Scoreboard

The first half of the regular season is winding down this week in Boys High School soccer — and in a number of WPIAL sections across numerous classifications there were some high stakes, top-of-the-table matches taking place around the district.

Below you’ll find the latest schedule/scoreboard along with social media highlights.

Thursday night brought an incredible surge of 8 regulation draws across WPIAL boys soccer, further emphasizing how much the PIAA’s 2026 rule change eliminating regular-season overtime has some affect on the standings:

• • Bentworth 0, Chartiers-Houston 0 (1A-2): Undefeated section-leader and three-time WPIAL and reigning PIAA champs Bentworth was held to a scoreless draw by Chartiers-Houston, giving up their first dropped section points of the campaign.

  • Eden Christian 0, Aquinas Academy 0 (1A-1): Another scoreless deadlock at the top of Section 1-1A.

  • Franklin Regional 0, Penn-Trafford 0 (3A-1): A classic rivalry ends deadlocked at net-zero GD.  At one point, PSN photographer Ed Thompson reported that Franklin Regional was so organized, that Penn-Trafford had not made it across the midfield point around the half.

• Point-Splitting Battles: Beaver Area 0, Hopewell 0 (2A-2) and Keystone Oaks 0, Seton LaSalle 0 (2A-4) both went full 80 minutes without a score. Meanwhile, Yough 2, Southmoreland 2 (2A-5), Riverview 2, Springdale 2 (1A-3), Ringgold 2, Laurel Highlands 2 (3A-2), and East Allegheny 1, South Allegheny 1 (2A-3) split the points.

• The “Zero GD” Balance: All 8 draws recorded a net-zero (0) GD shift for both teams. One could say that this prevents tired squads from taking wild late-game gambles or suffering late-game counter-attack losses in extra time, locking section races in tight point battles as we hit the second half of the section schedule. We look forward to getting more feedback from Coaches.  Look for more on that in the coming days.

• There were a few high scoring affairs, including Connellsville and Gateway combining for 12 goals — with Gateway walking away with a 7-5 win in Class 4A Section 1 battle, while Elizabeth Forward outlasted South Park, 5-3.

John Krysinsky

John Krysinsky has covered soccer and other sports for many years for various publications and media outlets. He is also author of 'Miracle on the Mon' -- a book about the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, which chronicles the club, particularly the early years of Highmark Stadium with the narrative leading up to and centered around a remarkable match that helped provide a spark for the franchise. John has covered sports for Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, DK Pittsburgh Sports, Pittsburgh Sports Report, has served as color commentator on Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC broadcasts, and worked with OPTA Stats and broadcast teams for US Open Cup and International Champions Cup matches held in the US. Krysinsky also served as the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at his alma mater, Point Park University, where he led the Pioneers to the first-ever winning seasons and playoff berths (1996-98); head coach of North Catholic boys (2007-08), associate head coach of Shady Side Academy boys (2009-2014).
