WPIAL / PIAA Girls High School Soccer Daily Report (Sept 23): Wednesday scoreboard

The first half of the regular season is winding down this week in Girls High School soccer — and in a number of WPIAL sections across numerous classifications there were some high stakes, top-of-the-table matches taking place around the district.

Below you’ll find the latest schedule/scoreboard along with social media highlights and a special look at some matches being played between schools looking to get into top pole position heading into the second half of the season.

Checking in on Top of the Table Clashes

  • In 4A, Section 2, Canon-McMillan were looking to make a statement against the reigning section champs, Peters Township as both teams came into the match without a loss in section, but Peters won 3-0 to seize control of first place, with Taylor McCullough scoring twice, Marina Hajnosz adding a goal and an assist, plus Fallan Malley had an assist. Now, at the halfway point of the regular season, Peters is in the drivers seat, posting 4-0-1 record and 14-1 advantage in all section matches.
  • Burrell and Freeport faced off for the first time since last postseason, as the neighboring schools met in the WPIAL Final, with Freeport coming away with the 1-0 win.  Then, Burrell flipped the script in the PIAA playoffs, making its way to the State Final. On Wednesday, they both came into their match without a loss in Class 2A, Section 2 — and not much was settled as the teams that know each other all too well played to a scoreless draw, leaving the teams to now turn the page to the second half of the regular season. Freeport (7-1-1, 4-0-1) and Burrell (8-0-4, 4-0-2) have allowed just three goals against section competition all season. This now begs the question, will this be the first of four matches again?
  • Also in 2A, Avonworth and Quaker Valley faced off in a match with first place implications — and they’ll have to walk away splitting the points in a 1-1 draw, with Annabel Miko scoring for the Quakers and Avonworth’s Violet Bevington also scored.  Avonworth is now 3-0-1, while Quaker Valley is 3-1-1 in section.
  • Same for Latrobe vs Penn-Trafford, and as an added bonus, PSN photographer, Ed Thompson was at Wednesday’s match as these two squads are in contention in a very top-heavy section.  That match also ended in a 1-1 draw with a dramatic conclusion.
