⏱️ Key Moments & Timeline

11′ (SA 1-0 WT): The Bears continue to live dangerously; Sewickley thought it had scored off a corner kick to double its advantage, but this PIAA crew quickly waves it off for an offensive foul in the 6-yard box.
9′ (SA 1-0 WT): Karsman continues to have the hop in the postseason. She drives one from 20 yards out, but it’s right at Hollins.
4′ (SA 1-0 WT): Moments later, Kaufmann finds room just inside the 18 and catches Weinreich off balance, but she pushes her attempt just wide of the left post. A big break for Sewickley after drawing first blood.
3′ (SA 1-0 WT): GOAL TO THE PANTHERS! Karsman, on the right wing, crosses into the middle of the box for Merryman, who forces it past Hollins for her 6th of the season!
WINCHESTER XI: Hollins (GK); Dobson; Cooper; Tonguz; Smuckler; Kaufmann; Salipante; Keller; Cao; Yang; Winston.

SEWICKLEY XI: Weinreich (GK); Sundo; Karsman; Carrabba; Stefanik; Eannarino; Ameredes; Borstelmann; Jardini; Peluso; Merryman.

Hey gang, Matt Popchock here, and so is the rain. I’ll be covering tonight’s WPIAL Girls 1A Championship match between the Sewickley Academy Panthers and the Winchester Thurston Bears, the top two seeds in this year’s tournament, on a misty night on the South Shore.

Watch this space, and follow PSN on Twitter/X, for live updates!

Unbeaten Sewickley Academy returns to the WPIAL final after knocking out defending champion Bentworth, who beat them for last year’s title. Winchester Thurston, led by Kimi Smuckler’s semifinal brace, gets another shot at the Panthers, who pumped in six goals in their September 28 victory over the Bears.

Both Sewickley and Winchester have conceded only once in three playoff matches, which begs the question: Will this, plus the weather, lead to a risk-averse, low-scoring contest? Or is Karsman, the Panthers’ prime playoff attacker, destined for another big night?
