WPIAL Boys Class 3A Championship Match
Final: Franklin Regional 1, Plum 0
The third time was indeed the charm for the Franklin Regional Panthers, who captured their first WPIAL boys soccer title since 2019 with a hard-fought, beautifully executed 1-0 victory over top-seeded Plum at F.N.B. Stadium.
After settling for runner-up honors in back-to-back seasons, a motivated senior class ensured they wouldn’t be denied, extending their unbeaten streak to 20 matches and closing the book on an intense battle between familiar suburban rivals.
The deciding moment arrived in the 30th minute when standout Thomas Bridges carved through midfield, lifted his head, and delivered a sublime arcing touch over a Plum defender to a sprinting Ian Johns.
Johns made no mistake, finishing clinically to break the scoreless deadlock and net what would stand as the golden goal.
It was a fitting climax for a Panthers side that leveraged explosive transition speed and resolute defensive structure to frustrate a potent Plum attack all night.
For Plum (19-1-1), which suffered its first defeat of the season, the Mustangs fought relentlessly into the second half, throwing numbers forward and creating dangerous sequences through Andy Strasser and James Jodkin, only to be repeatedly turned away by Franklin Regional’s fortified backline.
With the district crown secured, both neighborhood powers now turn their sights to the PIAA Class 3A State Tournament opening next Tuesday.

If you talk to local soccer purists in the eastern suburbs, this is the matchup everyone has wanted to see for years.
Plum and Franklin Regional are neighboring communities separated by just a few miles of Allegheny County topography, boasting historic rivalries on the gridiron, hardwood, and pitch. Yet, through the cruel randomness of WPIAL alignment cycles, these two powerhouse programs kept getting heartbreakingly separated right when postseason brackets were drawn.
When Plum made their jump up to Class 4A for the 2024–2025 two-year classification cycle, the historic section rivalry was put on ice, reduced to a single non-conference derby match per year. Then, when the Mustangs dropped back down to Class 3A for the current 2026 cycle, WPIAL realignment slotted them into separate sections. Fans waited, coaches plotted, and players dreamed of a playoff collision. Now, the universe has course-corrected: the neighboring giants finally meet, not in a routine section fixture, but under the blazing stadium lights of F.N.B. Stadium with the WPIAL Class 3A Championship on the line.
Tactical Breakdown & Star Power
-
Plum: Head coach Rafal Kolankowski has masterminded another brilliant tactical campaign with the Mustangs. Plum’s engine runs through newly minted WPSCA All-State forward Hudson Strasser, whose dynamic movement off the ball and lethal finishing punish even the most organized defenses. Kolankowski’s squad plays with an unmistakable swagger—combining technical midfield possession with rapid, vertical transitions.
-
Franklin Regional: The Panthers match Plum’s pedigree stride for stride. Anchored by All-State midfielder Thomas Bridges, Franklin Regional has navigated one of the most punishing 3A paths in recent memory. Bridges dictates the tempo in the middle of the park, possessing the vision to unlock stubborn defenses and the defensive grit to break up opposing counter-attacks.
The Verdict
This isn’t just a championship game; it’s a neighborhood grudge match years in the making. Expect a tactical chess match in the midfield, roaring student sections on both sides, and a 80-minute battle where every 50-50 challenge carries the weight of a regional bragging rights war.
