The semifinal round of the 2026 WPIAL Boys Soccer Tournament did not disappoint.

Over two nights of high-stakes, dramatic high school soccer, eight teams punched their tickets to the District Finals at F.N.B. Stadium (many social media accounts are still saying Highmark though — hard to break old habits!!), while others set their sights on state tournament play-in matches.

From dramatic second-half comebacks and set-piece magic to overtime golden goals and bracket-busting Cinderella runs, here are the 10 biggest takeaways and lessons learned from the WPIAL Boys Semifinals.

1. Seneca Valley Finally Solves Fox Chapel (Class 4A)

After losing three straight heartbreakers to Fox Chapel last season—including the 2025 WPIAL Final on penalty kicks—Seneca Valley finally broke the spell. Trailing 1-0 early after a jaw-dropping third-minute bicycle kick goal by Fox Chapel’s Wilder Jacobson, the Raiders looked like they might be haunted by the Foxes once again.

Whatever head coach George Williams said at halftime worked wonders. Zach White and Jacob Prex took over the second half, connecting on two brilliant goals—White equalizing on a Prex feed before White returned the favor for Prex’s go-ahead strike. Seneca Valley’s 2-1 victory sends them to the WPIAL Final for the fifth time in nine years.

“We haven’t forgotten about what happened last year,” Coach George Williams noted after the match. “Three times last year they beat us… This year we needed to get over it. I think we came in tonight, we played with passion, and we were able to rebound.”

2. Emmanuel Yu’s ‘Olimpico’ Sends North Allegheny to the Title Game (Class 4A)

Top-seeded Norwin came into Tuesday night having scored 64 goals on the season, completely dominating the first 20 minutes of play against North Allegheny. But high school playoff soccer often hinges on moments of sheer audacity, and sophomore Emmanuel Yu provided just that.

In the 32nd minute, Yu lined up a corner kick and curled a left-footed strike directly into the far post netting—a rare ‘Olimpico’ goal. Backed by stellar goaltending from Jaxon Cowger, the fifth-seeded Tigers held off Norwin’s late charges to secure a 1-0 victory and set up an all-Section 1 final against Seneca Valley.

Another angle:

3. Plum’s Defense remains an Unstoppable Fortress (Class 3A)

The top-seeded Plum Mustangs (19-0-1) rolled into the finals with a 2-0 victory over No. 4 Trinity on Monday night, extending their postseason shutout streak. Gavin Yurisinec pounced on a loose ball following a Mackenzie Maxwell throw-in just two minutes into the match, and Kent Holmes sealed the victory late.

Plum’s backline held Trinity to virtually zero clean looks on frame, keeping goalkeeper Chase Eber clean as the Mustangs advance to F.N.B. Stadium for the second time in three years.

Will this be the year that Plum finally gets to lift the hardware for the first time since the 2000s?

4. Franklin Regional Wins a Backyard Brawl to Set Up Historic Final (Class 3A)

In a wild back-and-forth thriller at Thomas Jefferson, Franklin Regional edged West Allegheny 3-2 to return to the WPIAL Final. Michael Hillebrand proved to be the hero, scoring twice—including the game-winner in the 71st minute—to erase an early West A lead.

The win sets up a long-awaited Plum vs. Franklin Regional championship match: a rivalry three-plus years in the making between neighboring powers who were separated by realignment cycles!

Will the third time (third straight WPIAL Finals appearance) be the charm for Franklin Regional.  The Panthers last won the WPIAL title in 2019, when they won back-to-back seasons.

5. Belle Vernon’s Cinderella Run is the Story of Class 2A

Who had No. 10 seed Belle Vernon booking a ticket to the WPIAL Finals? After knocking off No. 2 Deer Lakes on a golden-goal free kick in the quarterfinals, the Leopards (17-1-2) proved they were heavily under-seeded by shutting out No. 3 North Catholic 2-0 on Tuesday night.

First-half goal scorer Landon Bell and second-half finisher Dominic Pireaux provided the offense, while keeper Morgan Bunch made several huge saves to punch Belle Vernon’s ticket to their first district final since 2011.

6. Quaker Valley Survives 2OT Thriller on Freshman Magic (Class 2A)

Class 2A turned completely upside down on Tuesday night.

In a battle of unexpected semifinalists, No. 9 Quaker Valley outlasted No. 13 Ambridge in a 3-2 double-overtime epic.

Sophomore Connor West delivered two regulation goals for the Quakers, but Ambridge answered every punch.

Finally, in the second extra time period, freshman Isaiah Graham finished off a setup from West to net the golden goal and send Quaker Valley to Saturday’s 11:00 AM final against Belle Vernon.

7. Bentworth’s “Four-Peat” Quest Remains Alive (Class 1A)

Top-seeded Bentworth — in quest to win four straight WPIAL titles in Class 1A — survived a fierce test from No. 5 Springdale, winning 1-0 on Monday night to stretch their WPIAL playoff unbeaten streak to 15 straight matches dating back to 2022.

Springdale keeper Christian Stresky put on a clinic—including a sensational penalty kick save in the 45th minute—to keep the match scoreless deep into the second half. But in the 74th minute, Adam Moessner broke through with the game-winner to keep the Bearcats’ championship reign intact.

8. OLSH Sets Up a Third Straight Title Fight (Class 1A)

The Class 1A final will feature a familiar trilogy! No. 3 OLSH knocked off No. 2 Winchester Thurston 2-1 on Monday night, thanks to a first-half strike by Hunter Smith and a 62nd-minute header off a corner kick by Isaac Tarbuk.

OLSH now advances to face Bentworth in the WPIAL Class 1A Championship for the third consecutive year!

9. PIAA Play-In & Consolation Matches Take Center Stage Wednesday

While eight teams prepare for F.N.B. Stadium, several others still have their PIAA State Tournament dreams alive! On Wednesday night, crucial third-place consolation and regional play-in games take place:

  • PIAA Class 4A Districts 6-8-10 Regional Semifinal:

    • State College vs. Allderdice (7:00 PM @ Cupples Stadium)

  • WPIAL Class 3A Third-Place Consolation (Winner to PIAA):

    • Trinity at West Allegheny (7:00 PM @ West Allegheny HS)

  • WPIAL Class 1A Third-Place Consolation (Winner to PIAA):

    • Winchester Thurston vs. Springdale (7:00 PM @ U.S. Steel Community Field, Hazelwood)

(Note: In Class 4A, both WPIAL finalists automatically qualify for states. In Class 2A, all four semifinalists advance to the PIAA tournament, meaning no 2A play-in matches are required!)
