November Soccer Is Here: No. 20 Pitt opens ACC postseason quest hosting rematch with Syracuse

At Ambrose Urbanic Field, November isn’t just another month on the calendar—it is the destination.

Everything Jay Vidovich and his coaching staff instill during two-a-day summer sessions, early non-conference road tests, and physical ACC Friday nights is designed for this specific moment. Postseason soccer has arrived in Oakland, and No. 20 Pitt men’s soccer is right where it expects to be: playing meaningful knockout matches in front of its home crowd.

The No. 4-seeded Panthers (9-4-3, 4-2-2 ACC) open their 2026 postseason campaign on Wednesday, Nov. 4, hosting No. 13 seed Syracuse (7-7-2, 1-5-2 ACC) in the First Round of the ACC Tournament at 7:00 p.m. ET (streaming live on ACC Network Extra).

For Vidovich and his players, the core philosophy heading into tournament play remains simple: you build your habits all autumn so that when November arrives, you can play with freedom, trust your principles, and rise to the occasion.

When Preparation Meets the Postseason

For Jay Vidovich, now in his 11th season at the helm in Pittsburgh, navigating the gauntlet of the ACC postseason requires a specific mental switch.

Throughout his career—spanning multi-decade ACC dominance, College Cup runs, and national championships—Vidovich has consistently emphasized that regular season results exist to teach lessons, but November demands execution and championship grit.

That mentality has trickled down to senior leaders like goalkeeper Jack Moxom and attacker Albert Thorsen. After battling through a October schedule marked by key injuries, long road trips, and tight single-goal margins, the Panthers view the ACC Tournament not as a burden, but as the moment to showcase their growth.

By The Numbers: Opening Kick

  • The Series: Wednesday marks the 30th all-time meeting between Pitt and Syracuse, with the Panthers holding a slight 12-11-6 edge in the series.

  • The October Preview: The two sides battled to a dramatic 1-1 draw on Oct. 2 at SU Soccer Stadium. Albert Thorsen put Pitt ahead in the 13th minute, but the Panthers had to dig deep to secure a point after playing 49 minutes down a man following a first-half red card, before Pedro Gulli found the equalizer for the Orange in the 77th minute.

  • Top-Four Standing: Pitt locked up the No. 4 seed in the expanded 15-team ACC after compiling 14 conference points, winning the head-to-head tiebreaker over Virginia Tech. Syracuse enters as the No. 13 seed.

  • Defensive Steel: Redshirt freshman netminder Jack Moxom has anchored the defense, starting all 16 matches, recording 45 saves, 7 shutouts, and a 1.06 goals-against average. Pitt’s defense has surrendered just 17 goals all season (1.06 per game).

  • Offensive Catalysts: Freshman standout Mamadou Tall (5G, 2A, 12 pts) and Albert Thorsen (5G, 10 pts, 3 game-winners) lead the attack, while senior Caden Grabfelder has provided ice-cold execution from the penalty spot (2-for-2 PKs).

Scouting the Orange

While Syracuse finished 1-5-2 in conference play and enters off a 2-1 loss to Virginia Tech, Ian McIntyre’s squad remains one of the most dangerous double-digit seeds in the country. The 2022 National Champions feature a relentless attacking shape that averages 15.5 shots per game and 1.56 goals per contest.

Bryson Rodriguez leads the Orange attack with 5 goals and 12 points, while Kristjan Fortier and Pedro Gulli serve as secondary playmakers with 8 points apiece. In goal, Juan Martinez-Bastidas boasts a stanch .812 save percentage, a 0.82 goals-against average, and 5 clean sheets on the year.

In the ACC, where eight teams sit in the top 30 of the national RPI (Pitt ranks No. 5), seeding numbers mean very little once the whistle blows.

The Postseason Pathway

Securing the No. 4 seed gives Pitt a vital home-field advantage:

  1. First Round (Wed, Nov. 4): Winner advances to the ACC Quarterfinals.

  2. Quarterfinals (Sun, Nov. 8): The winner of Pitt/Syracuse will host the Quarterfinal round at Ambrose Urbanic Field against the winner of No. 5 Louisville vs. No. 12 Stanford.

  3. Semifinals & Final (Nov. 12 & 15): The final four advancing teams earn a trip to First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
