RMU Men’s Soccer rallies past NIU 2-1; Set to host Cleveland State in Horizon League Quarterfinals

Out of all the head-spinning mathematical scenarios facing Robert Morris on the final day of the Horizon League regular season, Jonathan Potter’s squad picked the absolute best script possible.

Trailing at the break after an unfortunate first-half bounce, the Colonials exploded for two second-half goals—capped by an 87th-minute breakaway winner from Anelson Azard—to defeat first-place Northern Illinois 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex.

The dramatic victory denied the Huskies a regular-season crown and propelled RMU (7-4-6, 4-1-5 Horizon League) into the No. 3 seed in the Horizon League Championship, clinching a home quarterfinal match on Sunday.

First-Half Deficit & Unfortunate Bounce

Northern Illinois brought early regular-season-title intensity, firing three quick shots in the opening minutes. The Huskies thought they earned a penalty kick in the 16th minute, but a video review overturned the call for an offensive foul.

After a quiet 20-minute spell in the central third, the deadlock broke against the run of play in the 36th minute. NIU’s Osagie Omoregie uncorked a long-range effort that took a wicked, unfortunate bounce past senior goalkeeper Josh Lane to stake the visitors to a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Second-Half Comeback & Tactical Domination

Needing a result to secure home field in the postseason, the Colonials came out of the locker room with relentless vertical urgency, controlling 57% of total possession and suffocating NIU with a 16-9 shot advantage (6-4 on goal) while giving up zero corner kicks.

  • The Equalizer (59′): The pressure cracked NIU’s low block just before the hour mark. Nicholas Samways whipped a cross from the left side to the back post, where Riley Cotton struck a volley across the six-yard box. Local standout John Krug met it with a clean header to level the match at 1-1.

  • Sustained Pressure: RMU nearly took the lead moments later as Samways had one attempt cleared off the goal line and another saved. In the 85th minute, Azard hammered a shot off the crossbar.

  • The Winner (87′): Two minutes after hitting the frame, Azard found redemption. Cotton picked up his second assist of the match by floating a precision long ball over the Huskies’ backline. Azard sprinted clear into the open field, carried into the box, and placed his finish cleanly off the left post and in to seal the 2-1 comeback victory.

Inside the Box Score & Milestone Notes

  • Historic Unbeaten Run: RMU closes the regular season on a six-game unbeaten streak (3-0-3), outscoring opponents 7-3. It is the longest unbeaten run of Jonathan Potter’s four-year tenure and the program’s longest since 2003 (3-0-3). Only seven teams in RMU men’s soccer history have achieved a 6+ game unbeaten streak.

  • Conference Goal King: Anelson Azard netted his 8th goal in just 10 appearances, leading the Horizon League in total goals and ranking 7th nationally in goals per game (0.80).

  • Multi-Point Producers: Riley Cotton recorded two assists (giving him 4G, 4A, 12 pts), while John Krug notched his 2nd goal of the season (10 pts, 3rd in Horizon League with 6 assists).

  • Defensive Ironmen: Miguel Dominguez, Abdul Kamara, and Riley Cotton played all 90 minutes, while Josh Lane tallied three saves for his 7th win of the campaign.
