Riverhounds Match Day Preview / Notebook: Resetting mindsets in Irvine, Wälti & Mertz on midfield dynamics & Busch on defensive standards

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC are back on the road tonight for a cross-country against Western Conference playoff contender Orange County SC at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, California (10:00 PM EDT / 7:00 PM PDT).

Coming off a frustrating 1-0 setback at Detroit City FC last Saturday in a rain-slicked Keyworth Stadium, the Hounds (11-10-5, 38 pts) quickly flushed the result and turned full focus to their travel preparation.

As of Saturday morning, the Hounds have officially dropped out of the top four, as a result of Hartford’s 2-2 draw vs Louisville on Friday.

The Hounds can take a step forward in fourth-place positioning in the East and securing better playoff seeding with a result against Orange County (9-10-6, 36 pts) who are also fighting for its own postseason life in the West—tonight represents a pivotal moment for Rob Vincent’s squad to re-establish its rhythm.

The club will be without Beto Ydrach, who is on international duty with Puerto Rico’s National Team in the Nations League.  Also, still on the injury report include Lasse Kelp (lower body, questionable) and Max Viera (knee, out).

Before departing for Southern California, PSN caught up with central midfielder Jackson Wälti, veteran playmaker Robbie Mertz, and assistant/goalkeepers coach Jon Busch at training to get a feel for the team’s mindset, tactical adjustments, and recovery approach.

Key Storylines

Vibes from Training, including bouncing back from last week’s loss, midfield and defensive stability and challenges of West Coast road trips…

In a long USL Championship campaign, the ability to reset after a tight road loss is what separates elite contenders from the rest of the pack.

Last week’s match at Keyworth Stadium presented its share of challenges, but the squad entered Thursday’s training session with clear intent.

“It’s always tough losing a game like that where the margins are so thin,” Jackson Wälti noted.

“When you go into a place like Detroit, you know it’s going to be a battle. But the coaches and leadership do a great job of keeping us grounded. We looked at the film, identified where we turned the ball over too easily, and immediately moved on. Our full focus this week has been on coming out with high intensity in Orange County.”

Veteran midfielder Robbie Mertz echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the importance of game management on long road trips.

“At this stage of the season, you can’t afford to dwell on a result,” Mertz said. “We know what we’re capable of when we play our brand of soccer. Going across the country to Irvine means we have to be locked in from the opening whistle. Controlling the match in the first 15 to 20 minutes and dictating tempo is huge when you’re playing on a wide grass pitch against a team that wants to push transition.”

A key element of Pittsburgh’s structure this season has been the central midfield stability provided by Wälti as a mainstay in defensive center midfield position — sometimes paired with Mertz and other times, with Griffin.

That reliability allows Mertz and Danny Griffin the freedom to roam, press higher, and float into wide channels.

“My role has really been to allow Robbie when he’s next to me, DG when he’s been next to me, to have a little bit more freedom, and I’ll be there right in front of Owen and Vic trying to anchor the defense a little bit,” Walti said.

“Definitely there’s been an emphasis on trying to play more with the ball… We’ve continued to be a strong defensive team that Pittsburgh has been historically, and I think we still take pride in that.”

Mertz highlighted how fluid the central relationships have become as the season has progressed and his evolving role from being the team’s leading chance creator in previous recent seasons, to helping stablize things a bit deeper this season.

“It’s definitely been a lot different than the last three years or so in terms of the role that I’ve played,” Mertz said.

“Much more of a defensive mindset and just trying to connect the game for us when we do have it. But I’ve enjoyed the challenge of it and learning new things.”

Early in the season, the Hounds did not look anything like the team that won the league title without giving up a goal through four matches — three which extended to 120-plus minutes.  To start the season, Pittsburgh allowed seven goals in its first three matches.

“We were definitely leaking goals at the beginning of the season,” Mertz said. “We made a correction on that and righted the ship. We’ve been in great form defensively for the majority of the season, but then we’ve had other things to correct, especially in possession.”

Assistant and Goalkeepers Coach Jon Busch praised the group’s defensive resilience while maintaining high standards for goalkeeper Nico Campuzano and the backline unit. Campuzano enters tonight’s match with nine league clean sheets (10 in all competitions), ranking near the top of the USL Championship leaderboards.

“Nico and the entire back group have done a fantastic job all year, but we never get comfortable,” Busch emphasized.

“Defending is an 11-man job from the front strikers all the way to Nico. Coming off Detroit, we talked a lot about box organization, set-piece communication, and staying sharp through stoppage time. Orange County has dangerous attacking pieces like Darren Smith and Sydney Wathuta, so keeping our line compact and managing spatial awareness in our box is top priority.”

Tactically, last week, Vincent and staff started Albert Dikwa for the first time since mid-August, pairing the 2023 USL Championship’s Most Outstanding Player up with Trevor Amann at the top of the attack, while Sam Bassett, who was in top form, having scored twice in consecutive weeks, came off the bench.

Reeling Orange County SC makes a late season coaching change — something Riverhounds veterans can relate to…

Pittsburgh now faces an Orange County squad that has been reeling of late — so much in fact that they sacked their Head Coach Danny Stone and appointed Academy Head Coach Dekel Keinan as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2026 USL Championship season — starting Saturday night.

“Professional players are going to take pride and they’re not going to want that to happen again,” Walti shared.

“There’s also a coaching change, so that’s also going to give them a little bit of a boost. We had a boost when we had a coaching change last year, so it’s something to be wary of.”

Orange County is winless since toppling El Paso on Aug. 1, going 0-5-2 in their past seven matches.

That includes a rough 6-0 defeat last weekend at Lexington that continued the team’s drop from the top of the West to the final playoff spot, only three points clear of Las Vegas in ninth.

Mertz also emphasized that despite Orange County’s recent ups and downs, the Hounds have to be locked in from the opening whistle because an opponent on their home turf after a coaching shift will play with heightened energy and motivation.

When things have been clicking for Orange County, it has been Yaniv Bazini (eight goals) and Ousmane Sylla (five goals) packing the scoring punch, and Chris Hegardt making things happen in midfield with a team-best five assists.

John K’s Projected Starting XI (4-4-1)

Expect Rob Vincent to field a strong, experienced starting unit to establish immediate control in Southern California, with Sam Bassett returning to the starting group while still having Trevor Amann and Albert Dikwa as potent forward options.

Without Ydrach and with Kelp coming back from an injury, while Danny Griffin has been getting starts at right back, it will be interesting to see what Vincent does with the back line. With much of the sentiment covered in this Notebook and feedback from the veteran players and coaching staff, there doesn’t seem to be too much concern, as back line depth has been a strength for the club this season, as Guillaume Vacter, Illal Osumanu, Perrin Barnes or even Junior Etou are all solid options to step into the starting XI for the Hounds on Saturday to fill in if Kelp is not able to go and with Ydrach’s absence.
