As the regular-season clock ticks into the home stretch, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC step onto the pitch at F.N.B. Stadium tonight for their only home fixture during the entire month of September.
Earlier this week, we took a detailed look at how Rob Vincent’s squad has navigated the 2026 campaign holding onto a position nearly identical to last year’s playoff run—boasting a compact goal differential (+2) and an elite defensive baseline (1.04 goals allowed/match).
With just six matches remaining on the slate—the fewest of any team in the Eastern Conference—the 4th-place Hounds have minimal room for error if they want to secure top-four playoff hosting rights on the South Side.
Standing in their way tonight is a desperate Loudoun United side. Sitting nine points below the playoff line with eight matches left, Virginia’s top club is fighting for its postseason survival.
Loudoun enters as the USL Championship’s premier draw specialist, with 11 of their 22 league contests finishing all square. Though they sold leading goalscorer Thor Úlfarsson back to Iceland in August, Loudoun brings genuine attacking pop behind 2023 Young Player of the Year Abdellatif Aboukoura (five goals) and Philadelphia Union loan forward Eddy Davis III, who scored a hat trick in a wild 5-4 thriller against Colorado Springs last week.
Pittsburgh, however, has owned the head-to-head matchup in 2026. The Hounds have won both previous enounters with LUFC —winning 3-2 in Northern Virginia back in March and shutting out Loudoun 2-0 in the Prinx Tires USL Cup on July 11 at F.N.B.
Injury Report & Squad Depth Boost
Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC:
-
Lasse Kelp (Lower Body) — OUT
-
Max Viera (Knee) — OUT
While losing Kelp and Viera thins squad rotation, the central midfield receives a major boost with the long-awaited return of Bradley Sample while Beto Ydrach and Guillaume Vacter are both back in the mix along the center back line. Sample, a crucial engine during last season’s playoff run has been sidelined for months but brings vital two-way link-up play and midfield control just as the physical demands of the season peak. With Jackson Walti emerging as the steady number six, while Robbie Mertz and Danny Griffin have been more interchangable, Sample provides Head Coach Rob Vincent with another option, and is likely to be used off the bench initially. Ydrach and Vacter were also instrumental in last season’s squad and postseason on the back line. Ydrach has been back in the starting lineup the past two matches.
Keys to a Riverhounds victory
-
Finish the Job in Stoppage Time: The Hounds have lost only once in seven matches since August 1 (3-1-3), but back-to-back draws in El Paso and Miami featured frustrating late concessions. Closing out matches cleanly when holding one-goal leads is paramount.
-
Neutralize Eddy Davis III & Protect Second Balls: Loudoun showed explosive creation in their 5-4 loss last outing. With Kelp out, Pittsburgh’s central defensive trio (Souza, Ydrach, Mikoy) must prevent Davis from isolating wingbacks on the turn.
-
Unlock Trevor Amann & Albert Dikwa Tandem: Amann (seven in league play) and Sam Bassett (five goals including one at Loudoun in March) carried the scoring weight in South Florida. If Dikwa can build on his 57-minute return from last weekend, his hold-up play, ability to link with creators and find seams in getting behind defenders can create high-value chances against a porous Loudoun backline (39 GA).
John K’s Projected Lineup (3-4-3 / 4-4-2 Hybrid)
- Goalkeeper: Nico Campuzano
